  • Backstory: Sayid
  • Featured Storylines: Sayid, Michael/Walt, Sawyer

Solitary

We open on Sayid (who, if you may remember, has wandered off from the rest of the group) resting on the beach, looking at the picture of the woman he got back a few episodes ago. He looks up, and sees something odd in the sand. It’s a cable, which he follows to the water, and then back into the jungle.

Beach: Jack is changing Sawyer’s bandages, while Sawyer bitches and moans and complains about his torture in the last episode, giving Jack hell for just standing by and watching. Jack reminds him that no one else is all that fond of him, and Sawyer reminds him that Kate is. Jack stalks off.

Kate’s standing on the beach staring in the direction Sayid left. Jack asks her what she’s up to. She says she’s worried about Sayid and reminds Jack that he left because of what he did to Sawyer. Jack tells her not to worry about Sayid.

Jungle. Sayid, following the cable coms across a trip wire. He steps over it gingerly, only to be caught up in a trap, wrapping around his feet and pulling him skyward. He smacks his head against a tree, and soon hangs there, limp.

Sayid is hanging there, waking up in the dark, when he hears a noise. He is cut loose from his trap.

Caves: Jack is treating a surprisingly talkative red shirt with a rash brought on by stress. He tells the guy to try to de-stress. Hurley takes umbrage, reminding Jack that virtually all they have to do there is stress, and it would be good if they had some outlet.

Sayid wakes up, seeing an electric light overhead. He sees he’s in a bunker. He hears a voice demanding, in several language to know where “Alex” is. He asks who the person is, and is shocked for his trouble. He says he has no idea who Alex is, and is shocked again. His screams dissolve into…

--flashback—

Sayid is beating the crap out of a prisoner, asking him to admit to a role in a bombing. The guy pukes.

Outside, Sayid’s superior tells him he’s being promoted. Over his shoulder, Sayid sees a female prisoner being led to the compound. He recognizes her.

Caves: A guy drops a small bundle of luggage at Hurley’s feet. Hurley’s curious about where they came from. Locke answers that they were found in the jungle. Hurley wonders why Locke and the strange guy were out there at night. Locke tells him that Ethan (the guy) has some experience tracking small animals.Hurley agrees to look through the luggage.

Walt asks Locke if he’s going out to hunt again and asks if he can come with. Michael overhears him and tells him to get back to bed.

Hurley looks through the luggage and finds something that amazes him.

Bunker: Sayid is being shocked, pleading with his captor to stop, and trying to explain who he is. He mentions the transmisson. His captor repeats the message, and Sayid realizes that she’s the one on the transmission. She is suspicious that he just “happened” to hear the signal, and punches him.

Sayid wakes up again in the morning, seeing his captor moving about the shelter. He notices her name—Rousseau—on a jacket. He notices the light is powered by a couple of large batteries, and mentions that those wouldn’t be enough to power the signal. His captor says it’s broadcasting from somewhere else and “they” control it, now. He asks who they are, she accuses him of being part of the conspiracy. Rousseau asks him who the person in the picture with his name on it. He says the woman’s name is Nadia.

--flashback—

Sayid’s superior gives him information on his new captive, the woman he recognized. He goes into the room to talk to her. She corrects him on her name, mentioning her childhood nickname. She tells a story about them playing and picking on each other in childhood. He steels himself and starts in questioning her. She takes it calmly, and shows him the marks from her previous torture. He apologizes if she is innocent, but reminds her that the bombing she’s accused of being involved in is a different story. She says she will not tell him anything. He says he must hurt her if she does not. She says she knows.

Bunker: Rousseau notes a bullet wound on Sayid. He tells her he was a soldier. She asks again about Nadia. He answers her with a question about who Alex is.

Caves: Michael is drawing something and holding a bamboo pole. Walt complains that he’s bored. Michael tells him he has to find a way to entertain himself. Hurley paws through things, looking for something, and then walks out, grabbing the pole out of Michael’s hands as he goes. Jack calls after him. Hurley just chuckles.

Bunker: Rousseau asks Sayid more questions. Sayid explains more about the crash, and why he’s alone, explaining that he left them because he did something he’s ashamed of. Rousseau asks if he left Nadia, too. Sayid says she wasn’t on the plane. That she’s dead. Because of him. Rousseau caresses Sayid’s face, telling him she’s sorry. She says she want to show him something.

Caves: Michael shows Jack a sketch of how he plans to set up a shower, to keep washing water separate from drinking water. Jack mentions that it’s good work, and Michael says he was an artist, as well as being in construction, in a previous life. Charlie interrupts them, saying Hurley has something he wants them to see.

Clearing: Hurley is standing next to a pole with an Aloha shirt on it. He announces to Charlie, Jack and Michael that he’s built a golf course. The others are skeptical, but Hurley reminds them that they need to de-stress somehow, or they’ll go mad from worrying about monsters and polar bears.

Bunker: Rousseau is playing with a music box. She says it’s broken. That it was a gift from her lover, Robert, and that it was a comfort to her before it broke. Sayid tells her he could try to fix it, if his hands were free. Rousseau starts preparing a syrnge, much to Sayid’s fear. She asks him what’s written on the back of the photo of Nadia. She injects him.

Jack and Michael are talking closely about a problem. The camera pans back and we see the problem is that he can’t figure which club to use for his lie. Hurley and Charlie do a little dance to distract him.

Our rash-riddled redshirt approaches them, complaining about his rash. He notices, with shock, that they’re playing golf. They’re embarassed a bit, but then he asks if he can join them.

Sayid wakes up to find he’s chained to a chair. Rousseau tells him she had to knock him out so she could safely move him. She asks why he offered to fix it after she tortured him. He says he can fix the box if she tells him her name. She says her name is Danielle. He asks how she came to be on the island. She says they were part of a science team, she and Robert. They were on a boat, three days out of Tahiti. A storm wrecked their ship. They made camp, intending it to be temporary. She says it was two months… Sayid interrupts her, asking about the distress signal’s message that “it killed them all.” Danielle says they were coming back from the black rock. It was them. They were the carriers. Sayid asks her more questions, asking if she’s seen other people on the island. She says no, but she’s heard them, whispering in the jungle. Sayid’s face falls, and Danielle realizes he thinks she’s insane. He says he thinks she’s been alone too long.

--flashback—

Sayid opens the door to Nadia’s cell and gives her some bread. He asks if she’s ready to talk. She says she’s ready to talk about trivial items. He tells her that if she cooperates he can get them to free her. She plays some word games with him, and ends by saying she knows he’s trying to be something he’s not.

Beach: Pan up on Shannon’s bikini-clad ass. Boone approaches her and tells her about the golf course. Kate overhears and is surprised. Boone says he’s going to go check it out. Kate and Shannon follow. Sawyer makes a crack about doctors playing golf. Kate asks if he wants to come. Sawyer sarcastcally reminds her that his presence probably isn’t wanted. Kate says, as one outcast to another, he should make more of an effort.

Bunker: Sayid has fixed the music box. Danielle gratefully cradles the box and thanks him. He asks her to let him go. She says she can’t, that he has to stay because it’s not safe. They’re interrupted by growling. Danielle grabs a gun, and says if they’re lucky, it’s one of the bears. Sayid says it might be the “thing” out there, the monster. Danielle stops at the top of the ladder, and tells him there’s no such thing as monsters.

--flashback—

Sayid’s superior tells him that his captive must be executed, because she has not told anything, and it will send a message to the others. Sayid hesitates, his superior asks if it’s a problem. He says no. He comes into her cell, and tosses her a hood. She asks if he’s going to hurt her.

Bunker: Sayid removes his cuffs with the aid of the screwdriver he used to fix the music box. He gathers some maps, and a rifle and climbs up the ladder. He leaves the pic of Nadia behind.

Golf course: Quite a crowd has gathered. Kate approaches Jack, who had missed seeing her arrive. She comments on his positive attitude, and he explains how Hurley worked magic with the crowd by building the course. Some hilarity over mulligans ensues with Charlie and Hurley. Walt approaches Michael, complaining that he was left alone at the caves. Michael says he left him with Claire, but Walt says she fell asleep. Michael asks if he wants to play. Walt declines. It’s Michael’s turn, so he tells Walt he’ll talk with him later. Walt walks off.

Jungle: Sayid is wandering off. He hears a noice, and realizes Danielle is behind him. They both raise their guns at each other. He tells her to put the gun down.

--flashback—

Sayid and Nadia are walking along with two soldiers. He tells the soldiers he’ll take care of it. They walk off. He rushes her aside and gives her instructions on how to escape. She tells him to come with her, but he can’t, because they would kill his family if he deserted. She grabs the pic of herself from his pocket and writes something on the back. Sayid’s superiror comes down the hall, wonders what they’re doing. He approaches them. Sayid pulls his gun and shoots the officer. Nadia panicks, saying he has to come with her now. He says no, that he’ll say she took the gun and shot both him and the officer. He shoots himself in the leg. She pleads with him for a moment, and then goes, leaving her picture behind.

Jungle: Sayid tells Danielle to not shoot, because he doesn’t want to hurt her. She raises her gun. He fires, but the gun doesn’t go off. She says the firing pin was removed and Robert didn’t know that either when she shot him. Sayid realizes she shot them all. She says they were all sick. Sayid drops the gun and says he’s not sick, so why kill him. She says she can’t lose him. She needs someone to touch. She raises the gun. He says “you’ll find me in the next life, if not this one.” Danielle is confused. He tells her that’s what Nadia wrote to him, and that he knows what it’s like to hold on to someone that long, and that they only way out is with the help of the others. He asks her to come with him. She strokes his face, then begins to walk off. She tells Sayid to watch the people he’s trying to get back to. He calls after her, asking who’s Alex. She says Alex was her child, and then walks away.

Golf course: Charlie lines up his shot, and misses terribly. It’s Jack’s turn. He lines up. Hurley says he bets on Jack. A round of bets goes around the crowd. Saywer approaches, and says he has sunscreens and a flashlight against Jack. There is silence for a moment, then Kate says she’ll take the bet. Boone agrees as well, telling Shannon they need sunscreen.

A knife hits a tree. Locke is practicing. He notices Walt behind him. Walt asks if Locke will teach him how to do that. Locke hands him the knife.

Jungle: Sayid is walking back in the dusk. He pauses, and starts hearing voices around him….
