House of the Rising Sun
Another eyeball opening. This time it’s Sun, sitting on the
beach playing with a flowering plant, and watching Jin trying to
catch a fish in the shallows. She looks over and sees Kate and
Jack flirting with each other.
Kate asks Jack about his tatoos, questioning whether he’s a
hardcore spinal surgeon. Charlie interrupts their “verbal
copulating” and mentions that they need to get hiking (along
with Locke) to go get the water. They head out, Charlie making
wisecracks.
Sun watches Jin some more, as he’s whacking a fish against a
rock.
--flashback—
Sun is at a fancy party. The waiter brings her a drink with a
note. We see the waiter is Jin. Later they meet in a quiet spot,
and Jin gives her a sweet-smelling flower. He says someday the
flower will be a diamond. Sun says they should elope, but Jin
says he wants to ask her father’s permission.
Back on the beach, Jin sees Michael and suddenly rushes him,
shoving Walt out of the way and beating the crap out of Michael,
pushing him down in the surf while Sun screams.
---commercial break—
Sun’s screaming again, begging Jin to stop. Most of the rest of
the castaways are just standing around watching. Sayid and
Sawyer finally rush over, Sayid tackling Jin and asking Sawyer
for the handcuffs, which they then use to chain Jin up to a
piece of shrapnel. Sayid asks Sun what happened.
In the jungle, our four water gatherers find the area where Jack
found the waterfall last episode. Charlie suggests that they
look through the debris that’s there. Jack tells him to go ahead
and look through, and keep an eye out for any medical supplies,
particularly drugs. Charlie, reminded that he needs a hit sneaks
off and goes to get into his stash. Locke stops him, telling him
to not move, because he’s standing on a beehive. Charlie starts
to panic. Jack and Kate come out to see what’s going on and
Locke says they need to find something to seal the hive.
Back on the beach. Sawyer and Sayid are trying to figure out
what happened, questioning Michael about what could’ve set Jin
off. Michael says he has no idea, except that where he’s from,
Koreans don’t like blacks. After a bit more fruitless
discussion, they decide to leave Jin chained up until they
figure out what happened.
Sun crouches next to Jin, staring off at the others….
--flashback—
Sun is standing on a bridge on a lush Korean estate, looking
concerned. Jin approaches her, looking solemn. She asks him what
happened. He tells her her father approved of their getting
married. After a joyful embrace, Sun asks him how it happened.
Jin tells her that he agreed to work for her father in exchange
for the permission to marry her. Jin produces a big diamond ring
for her. Sun says he can’t afford that, and he says now he can.
Back in the jungle, Charlie is looking more dyspeptic,
complaining about his irrational fear of bees as Jack tries to
cover the hive. Charlie brilliantly slaps at a bee on his face,
stepping back, cracking the hive open, loosing an angry swarm,
which then follows the four as they dash back into the cave.
Kate and Jack arrive first, stripping off their shirts. Kate
comes up to the back of the cave, resting at a small hollow and
turns around to see… A skeleton!
--commercial break—
Jack hears Kate shriek and comes over to look at the skeleton.
He sees another, and surmises that there is no trauma, and it
looks like they were laid to rest where they were. He examines
them a little, saying that the degrading of their clothing makes
it look like they’ve been there for 40-50 years. He pokes around
on one of the bodies and finds a small pouch, containing two
polished stones, one black, one white.
Locke and Charlie come back in, Charlie bitching and complaining
about being stung all over. Charlie hands Kate’s shirt back to
her, which she had dropped along the way. Realizing she’s
half-naked, she shyly explains her shirt was full of bees.
Charlie cracks that he would’ve thought C’s, earning a sharp
look from Kate. Charlie notices the bodies, and mentions that
they may be the people that were there before them. Locke asks
what he means, and Charlie covers, realizing that Locke doesn’t
yet know about the radio transmission. Locke asks who the men
were, and Jack mentions one of the bodies is female. Locke says
they must be their very own Adam and Eve.
Back on the beach, Sun is attending to Jin, treating an abrasion
on his wrist from the cuffs.
--flashback—
Sun comes into her house, carrying shopping bags. She sees a box
on the sofa, and picks a puppy out of it. Jin comes out of the
bedroom and asks if she likes it. He says the puppy should keep
her company, since he’s always working. She asks him if he
remembers when all he had to give her was a flower. His cel
phone rings.
Back in the cave, Locke suggests that someone should stay behind
and help go through the debris there. Jack and Kate agree that’s
a good idea and he wanders off to help Charlie. Jack tells Kate
that he’s realized hauling all that water back and forth all the
time is going to be a pain, and says maybe it would be a good
idea to bring the people to the water instead. He notes the
particular features of the location—sheltered, protected from
predators and weather, and thinks maybe the dead they found had
actually lived there. Kate is skeptical.
Back on the beach, Walt is staring at Jin, who stares back.
Michael hollers at him and takes him away. Walt asks why Jin
doesn’t like them, and references the comment Michael made about
Koreans not liking blacks. Michael shamefully tells him that’s
not true. Walt asks why he would’ve been attacked, and Michael
says he doesn’t know, that he’s been with Walt the whole time,
and asks what kind of man Walt thinks he is. They talk a bit
about how little they know about each other, and Michael gets a
good jab in when Walt doesn’t know his birthday.
Sun pleads with Jin about trying to talk to people and explain
what’s going on.
--flashback—
Late at night at their home, Jin comes in, covered in blood. Sun
gets up off the couch and follows him into the bathroom,
demanding to know what’s going on as he washes the blood off.
Demanding to know what it is he does for her father. He pushes
her away and she slaps him. He tells her he does whatever her
father asks. That he does it for them.

Back in the jungle, Kate and Jack are trudging back to base
camp. She stops to tie her shoe and notices Jack staring
aimlessly at her. She asks if he’s checking her out. He looks
bewildered. She says there’s no harm if he was. He shakes his
head, telling her if he was checking her out, she’d know it. She
asks what he was thinking. He says he wasn’t thinking “that.” He
tells her he was thinking that if they lived at the caves they
could build a dam around the spring and get the infirmary off
the beach. He says he’ll have a lot of convincing to do, because
some people still think they’re going to be rescued and aren’t
thinking about safety while they’re there.. Kate’s still
skeptical.
Back in the cave, Charlie pauses in his sorting through debris
and starts to wander out. Locke begins to follow him. Charlie
asks why, saying he’s just going to the loo. Locke says it’s
dangerous out there and he won’t let him out of his sight.
Charlie tells him to bugger off. Locke says he knows who Charlie
is, and what he’s looking for. Charlie’s confused. Locke tells
him he recognizes him from the band. Charlie, giddy to be
recognized stays put and listens to Locke talk about the band.
Locke asks him how long since he’s played his guitar. Charlie
gives a rather exact number. Locke sees that he misses it, and
tells him he might still find it in the debris somewhere.
Charlie is skeptical, but Locke tells him he has faith he’ll see
the guitar again.
Jack and Kate are almost back at camp, and come across Sayid
chopping up firewood. They sit and drink for a while, and Sayid
tells them what happened with Jin and Michael. Jack tells him
about transferring the camp to the caves. Sayid argues with
this, saying it’s a bad idea to leave the beach for anything but
supplies, because they need to keep the signal fires going. He
leaves, saying he won’t admit defeat.
Back on the beach, Jack and Kate start talking to people about
moving. Sayid comes to Michael and apologizes for being
suspcious of him. Sayid tells Michael about Jack’s plan, Michael
says he and Walt are staying right there. Jack gives Jin some
water, and talks to Hurley, who says he’ll go with him. Hurley
then asks Jack whether he and Kate are going to move into the
cave together. Jack demures, asking whether he’s still in high
school.
Kate’s sitting on the beach, Sawyer comes over and teases her
about Jack and Sayid fighting over where she’ll end up. Sawyer
says he’s wondering, too. Kate asks if he’s going. He weighs the
pros and cons but doesn’t answer. She asks again. He tells her
he asked first.
Michael goes off into a grove to hack up some wood. Sun watches
him, and follows him in.
--flashback—
Sun is in her house, talking to an interior designer about
plans. Jin is on the phone, and waves them off. They go into the
bedroom to talk. The designer starts asking Sun questions, and
we soon learn she’s been arranging for Sun to disappear, leaving
Jin. The faux designer gives her some documents and instructs
her to disappear at the airport in Sydney at 11:15, and there
will be a car waiting for her.
Back in the grove, Sun approaches Michael. He freaks out, and
gives her some attitude. She surprises the hell out of him by
telling him, in English, that she needs to talk to him.
--commercial break—
Michael questions why Sun has never spoken in English before.
She explains that Jin doesn’t know. Michael is confused about
why her husband wouldn’t know, she explains he has a bad temper.
She explains to Michael that the reason why Jin attacked him is
because of a watch he’s wearing, which belonged to her father
and that keeping it was a matter of honor. Michael tells her he
found the watch and doesn’t understand how that excuses Jin’s
behavior. Sun tells him he doesn’t know her father, and asks for
his help.
Back at the cave, Charlie tries again to “go to the loo.” Locke
stops him, telling him to hand the drugs over, saying Charlie’s
going to run out sooner or later, and that if he gives the drugs
up now, at least his painful detox will be his choice. Charlie
starts to wander off. Locke asks him if he wants his guitar.
Charlie stops and nods. Locke asks if he wants the guitar more
than the drug. Charlie says he wants it more than he knows.
Locke says the island might give him what he’s looking for, but
he has to give the island something. Charlie hands the last of
his stash over, and asks if he can find the guitar. Locke tells
him to look up. Charlie’s confused, wondering whether Locke
wants him to pray. He looks up, and sees his guitar case,
intact, lodged halfway up a small embankment. Charlie grins
happily, and then starts to cry from joy.
Back on the beach, Jack tells Kate it’s almost time to go. Kate
tells him that she doesn’t want to be Eve, that she can’t dig
in. He tells her others can wait on the beach and come back for
them. She says it’s not that. Jack says he doesn’t understand,
and then asks what it is she did. She tells him he had his
chance to know. Dejected, Jack tells her if she needs him, she
knows where he is. He walks off.
Michael approaches Jin with an axe, explaining to him, although
he doesn’t understand, that he’s had a really damn bad week and
it sucks to be attacked for a watch. He throws the watch at Jin,
raises the axes… and uses it to cut Jin’s handcuffs loose. He
warns Jin to stay away from him. He walks away, past Sun.
--flashback—
In the airport, Jack is arguing with the gate attendant, and Sun
is off to one side, staring at a clock that reads 11:15, while
Jin waits in line. She starts toward the door, crying. She
glances back. Jin looks over at her, and shows her a flower,
like the one he’d given her the night at the party. She looks at
the clock again, and then comes over next to him. He sees she’s
been crying and asks why. She tells him it’s because the flower
is beautiful.
--commercial break—
In the cave, Charlie is trying his guitar out again. Jack comes
back, leading a line of “new tenants” including Hurley, Jin and
Sun. Hurley breaks out his cd player again, and with a Willie
Nelson song playing over, we see the two different groups. On
the beach: Sawyer, Sayid, Kate, Boone, Shannon, Walt, Michael.
Walt asks Michael when his birthday is. In the caves, Sun holds
a dress up for Jin’s approval. We fade out on a shot of Kate,
staring into the fire.
