Tabula Rasa We open on a panoramic shot of people milling about and sorting debris on the beach. Then we get SuperJack working on The Marshal (Shrapnel Guy), who keeps telling Jack not to trust “her” and “she’s” dangerous. The Marshal asks for his cuffs, and directs Jack to his jacket pocket. While in there, Jack finds Kate’s mug shot. Our six mountain climbers are on their way back down, and after some bickering, they decide to make camp for the night on the hillside. Around the campfire, Sayid explains more about their situation, and possible location, based on the flight path. Sawyer demands that they talk about the radio transmission. Sayid decides it would be a bad idea to tell the others about it, to avoid alarming them. Back on the beach, Jack is explaining to Hurley about how the GargantuBeast can’t be a dinosaur, because dinosaurs are extinct. Hurley watches as Jack examines the Marshal, and explains how bad off he is. Hurley sees Kate’s mugshot and starts worrying. Jack blows him off. --commercial break— At the mountainside camp, Boone wakes people up by fishing out the gun and ammo, blathering about standing watch. The gang argues over the gun, and decides Kate should be the one to hold onto it. --Kate flashback— Kate wakes up to the point of a rifle. She’s been sleeping in a farmer’s sheep pen. She and the farmer talk for a while. She tells him her name is Annie and she’s a Canadian who flew to Australia after college and has been walking around. Farmer offers her a job on the farm, saying he needs the help, and he has a big mortgage to pay. They go to shake on the deal and we see he has an artificial arm. Back on the beach, Hurley alerts Jack that the party is back. Sayid explains to all the castaways that they didn’t get any signal, and that if he gets all the electronic equipment organized maybe he can get a stronger signal. He organizes three groups: electronics, food and water. Kate approaches Jack and says she needs to tell him something. Perhaps expecting a confession, Jack is a little confused to hear her tell him about the transmission. Kate asks how the Marshal is doing, and whether he’s woken up or said anything. Jack lies and says he hasn’t. --commercial break— Back on the beach, Hurley and Jack are hauling stuff around. Hurley asks if Kate told Jack anything. Jack says no, that it’s not his business. He says the Marshall won’t be better without more antibiotics, and says maybe there might be some in the luggage in the overhead bins, in the fuselage, where the b-o-d-y-s are. Hurley blanches at this task, so Jack volunteers, leaving Hurley on watch. As he’s going through stuff in the dark, creepy fuselage, Jack hears a noise, and shines a flashlight around, finding Sawyer sitting off in a corner. He asks what he’s doing there, and Sawyer says he’s been pawing through things, finding stuff. Jack scolds him for stealing from the dead, and Sawyer scolds back that that’s what Jack is doing, implying he’s wasting time and medicine on the Marshal. Back on the beach, Charlie is messing around with a wheelchair, and sees Claire hauling a large piece of luggage. He offers to help her with it. Sun approaches Jin, saying she may have found his bag. He says that’s not it, to keep looking, and then tells her she’s a filthy mess, and she should go wash up. Charlie asks Claire how the baby is, and asks if her husband was on the flight. She says she’s not married. Charlie grins, “who needs men, right? Bloody useless” (Charlie and Claire, sittin’ in a tree…) Hurley dashes out of the Marshal’s tent, on his way to get water, and runs into Kate, who introduces herself, saying she’s looking for Jack. She turns, and Hurley sees the gun stuck in the back of her jeans. He freaks, and runs off. Rain starts, and people run for shelter. Kate comes into the tent, hovering close to the Marshall. --Kate flashback— She’s in the farmhouse at night, and goes into a hidey hole in the pantry, where she’s been hiding her wages. The Farmer realizes she’s leaving, and asks her to stay, saying how he’s been upset that she’d never talked about herself at all, and is now leaving without telling him. He convinces her to stay one more night, and offers to drive her to the train station in the morning. Back in the tent, Kate is hovering over the Marshal, and he wakes up, flipping out and starting to strangle her. Jack comes in in the nick of time and splits them up. He demands to know what Kate did, and she says he grabbed her. Jack assesses the Marshal’s condition, saying it’s bad and he’s not responding to the antibiotics. He goes out, looking for water. Kate follows, demanding to know whether the Marshal will die, and how quickly, and how painfully. Jack says it will be slow, and painful. Kate asks if Jack can put him out of his misery. Jack tells Kate he saw her mugshot, and that he’s not a murderer. --Kate flashback— Kate and the Farmer are in his truck, listening to Patsy Cline. Kate notices that there’s a black SUV following them, and she realizes, asking how long the Farmer has known about her. He says he saw her picture in the post office, and that he ratted her out for the reward money for his mortgage. The SUV pulls alongside them, and the Marshall is in it. --commercial break— On the beach in the rain, Walt and Michael are talking. Michael is concerned about Walt talking to Locke. Walt says Locke told him a secret, and Michael demands to know. Walt says Locke said “a miracle happened here.” Michael says surviving was the miracle, and tells Walt he shouldn’t hang out with Locke anymore. Walt argues, saying Locke is his friend. Michael says he’s his friend, too. Walt counters that a friend would find his dog. Michael says he’ll find the dog as soon as it stops raining. Which it promptly does. Michael is picking through the jungle, looking for the dog. He hears some rustling and growling. Very non-doglike. Something starts coming and Michael takes off, ending up in a small grove of trees… …where Sun is half-naked, washing up. Michael stumbles over himself, trying to be nice and explain he didn’t see anything. He hands her her clothes and wanders off. Back on the beach, the Marshal is hollering out in pain. Charlie approaches Locke, who is whittling, tells Charlie he’s making a whistle. Charlie says he used some tribal flutes once in a recording session. Locke is unimpressed. Shannon tells Boone she wishes the Marshall would just die. Sayid asks Jack if he can help, and says the others are getting upset. Jack says he’s trying to save the marshal’s life, Sayid says rumor has it he can’t. Night falls. Kate is on the beach, trying to light a fire. Sawyer comes up behind her and offers his lighter. He says he came by to thank her for taking the gun from him. He says he’s glad he doesn’t have it because anyone who did would want to put the Marshal out of his misery, mentioning that since there’s only one bullet left, it would be poetic. Jack is working on the Marshall. He tells Jack again not to trust her, and that he wants to talk to Kate alone. --commercial break— --Kate's flashback-- The SUV and the truck are playing a little game of chicken. Kate grabs the wheel of the truck, causing it to roll over and crash, bursting into flame. She gets out, and drags the Farmer to safety, losing his prosthetic arm in the process, only to find the Marshal's gun in her face. Back in the tent, the Marshal asks Kate what the favor was, reminding her that just before the crash, she asked him for one. We get a small flashback to the crash, re-iterating this. Kate tells the Marshal she was going to ask him to make sure the Farmer got the reward money. The Marshal tells her she would've gotten away if she hadn't tried to save the Farmer. She reminds him that she did get away (referring to their current situation. The Marshall acknowledges that he's going to die, and asks if she's going to do it. Hurley asks Jack where Kate is, and he says she's in with the Marshall, and he's not worried about her being a threat to him. Hurley says he saw a gun on her, which alarms Jack. Kate walks out of the tent, and we hear a shot. Sawyer walks out of the tent, and admits he shot the Marshall, at his request. We hear some choking. Jack rushes in, noticing that Sawyer shot the Marshal in the chest, missing his heart and perforating his lung, which won't cause him to die for another few days. Jack shouts at Sawyer to get out, while he works on him. Sawyer stalks out, and tries to light a cig with a dead lighter. He tosses the cig angrily aside, and then suddenly, the choking noises stop. Jack comes out of the tent, looking worse for the wear, and wanders off. --commercial break-- On the beach the next morning, Locke is sitting alone. He uses his new whistle, which is very high-pitched. After a few moments, the dog comes out of the jungle, hearing the whistle. Locke comes over to where Michael and Walt are sleeping, and wakes Michael, telling him he found the dog, and has tethered him to a tree. He tells Michael that he knows Walt has lost his mother, and says Michael should be the one to bring the dog to him. Jack is sitting by the shore. Kate sits next to him, and says she wants to tell him what she did. Jack says he doesn't want to know; that it doesn't matter, who they were before. That three days ago, they all died, and all deserve to start over. A montage over a nice little song, coming from Hurley's cd player. Hurley gets sand out of his shoes. Jin comes over to a sleeping Sun and gently pushes her hair out of her face. Boone gives Shannon her sunglasses, which he has repaired. Sayid tosses an apple to Sawyer. Charlie is writing on his fingers again. They say "late" instead of fate this time. Claire rubs her belly. Michael brings the dog to Walt, for a joyous reunion. We close on a slightly sinister shot of Locke, sitting alone. --end episode 3-- |
