Exodus, Pt 2

After a brief recap, we pick up at the end of Exodus 1. The raft has sailed, the rest of the castaways are preparing to head for the caves, away from The Others, and Danielle, Arzt, Jack, Kate and Hurley are getting the dynamite to blast open the hatch.

We get a new eye opening—this time it’s Turniphead, who’s crying up a storm. Claire’s trying to change him and get going to the caves. Charlie comes up to let her know time is short. She freaks out, trying to do everything at once, and saying she has no idea what she’s doing, and trying to protect her child at the same time as getting ready is too much.

Charlie approaches Sayid, and asks for a spare gun, to protect Claire and the baby. Sayid refuses, saying Charlie is too emotionally involved.

At The Black Rock, the gang stares in wonder for a while. Hurley wonders how the ship got there. Danielle tells them the explosives are in the hold, and wanders off. Locke tells Jack to let her go, and he’ll lead them back. Hurley and Arzt decide to hang back, while the others explore the ship.

Inside, Locke, Kate and Jack pick around some eerie ship debris. Jack comes across a skeleton, chained to a wall. Locke surmises that The Black Rock must’ve been a slave ship, enroute to a mining colony. They pick around some more and Kate finds the box with the dynamite.

Back outside, Arzt is babbling to Hurley, boring the daylights out of him, and then starts ranting about feeling left out from the goings-on of the cool kids. He looks up, mid-rant, and sees the others bringing out the box, and stops them, telling them to handle it carefully. He explains that in high heat, dynamite sweats nitroglycerine, and becomes extremely volatile. He wraps a stick up in Kate’s shirt, babbling the entire time. He waves his hand the wrong way, and BOOM. Little bits of Arzt rain down on the others.

--Flashback—

Sun helpfully cuts Jin’s sandwich for him, before dumping coffee on him. Jin wanders off to the bathroom to clean up.

Walking past, Sayid has been released by security.

In the bathroom, a guy in a loud shirt tries to talk to Jin, noting he doesn’t speak English. Then he suddenly starts speaking Korean. He tells Jin he works for Mr. Paik, and has been following him. He knows Jin is trying to leave. He says that if Jin does so, he’ll lose Sun. He says Jin is not free, and never will be.

On the raft, Jin looks pretty free. Walt points out part of the island that they’re sailing past. Michael wonders how a place that big never gets discovered. Sawyer sings a bit of Bob Marley, to Michael’s amusement. The raft floats on.

Back on the beach, Sun stares out to sea, and gazes at her wedding ring.

Shannon struggles with three full bags and the dog. Sayid asks her why she needs all that stuff. Her bag falls open. Sayid sees that it’s full of Boone’s stuff. Shannon says she needs the stuff, and breaks down. Sayid caresses her face, and offers to help her.

Back at the ship. Hurley stares, freaked out about the Arzt explosion. Kate talks to him. He says it’s his fault, that he’s a jinx. Jack and Locke carefully package up a few the least-corroded sticks. Jack asks again whether this is a good idea. Locke says it’s the only way. Locke talks about how it feels like playing the game of Operation, freaking Jack out when he makes a buzz sound. Jack asks if he likes to play games. Locke says absolutely.

Back on the beach, Charlie shows Claire a snuggli he’s made. Claire kisses his cheek, grateful. Suddenly Danielle approaches them, asking for Sayid. Charlie runs off to get him. Claire asks Danielle what happened, but Danielle fixates on Turniphead. She asks to hold him. Claire backs away from her. She notices scratches on Danielle’s arm. She suddenly remembers that she’s the one who scratched her, weeks ago in the caves. She asks Danielle why.

--flashback—

Charlie is tearing through a filthy hotel room, looking for his stash. A floozy is passed out on the bed. She wakes up, asking to do one more bump for the road. He says he doesn’t have any. She says there should be some left. He says he’ll give her a signed cd later instead. She blows him off, saying she doesn’t care about the band. He’s hurt. She notices he’s holding something. They wrestle for it. She beats the hell out of him, telling him he’s pathetic. He keeps hold on the stash.

Back on the beach, Charlie catches up with Sayid, saying Danielle needs him. They hear screams. Sun is with Claire, tending to a head wound. Turniphead is gone. So is Danielle. Charlie punches Sayid, blaming him for not giving him a gun. Sayid stops him, and says if they leave now, they can catch her.

Back at the ship, they determine that they should split up the sticks into two packs, three sticks each. Kate offers to take one. Jack refuses. Locke says they should draw straws. Hurley stays out of it, preoccupied by Arzt bits. They draw straws. It’s Kate and Locke to carry.

Raft. Michael explains to Walt how the radar works. Sawyer’s reading the messages in the bottle. Walt scolds him. Sawyer says he didn’t write one, and the only letter he ever wrote was to the man he’s going to kill. Walt asks why he needs to kill him. Sawyer says he just needs to.

Running through the jungle, Charlie and Sayid pause for a moment. Sayid says Danielle probably took Turniphead to trade him with The Others for her child. He hands Charlie a gun, telling him to be careful. Claire catches up to them, saying she wants to come with. Sayid and Charlie tell her no. She freaks out, and Charlie finally calms her. She pleads with him to bring the baby—Aaron—back.

--flashback—

In the airport, Walt is playing a video game, ignoring Michael. Michael finally tells him to stay put while he calls work. On the phone, Michael is talking to his mother, saying he can’t handle the responsibility, and asking if she’ll take him. She refuses. He hangs up and turns around. Walt is standing there. He asks for new batteries.

On the raft, Michael shows Walt how to steer with the rudder. Michael explains to him what direction they’re going, to find a shipping lane. Walt asks him why he and his mom split up. Michael says they just split up, and explains that Walt’s mom didn’t want him to see his son. Suddenly, the rudder breaks off. Sawyer strips off and jumps in after it. Michael tosses a rope to him. Jin drops the sail. After some scary tension, they finally pull Sawyer and the rudder back in. Michael grabs Sawyer’s shirt for him, and finds a gun. He hands it over, glaring.

Jungle. Jack carefully puts Kate’s pack on. They arrange how to hurry back, in formation, and start off.

Caves. The castaways finally arrive, Claire in tow. Shannon sits down heavily. She notices the area where Boone lay when he was being treated. Sun sits down next to her, and tells her that Boone died bravely. Sun asks if all of the things that have happened were because they’re being punished by fate for all their bad deeds. Claire says no-one is punishing them, and that there’s no such thing as fate.

On the Danielle trail, Charlie and Sayid rush, following to the source of the black smoke. In the jungle, they become separated briefly. They meet back up and stop to rest. Right next to the drug plane. Sayid explains about the plane, showing Charlie one of the statues. Sayid packs up and heads off again. Charlie stares at the broken statue, bags of smack falling out of it.

On the trail back from the ship, our trekkers pick their way carefully back. Hurley asks Locke what he thinks is inside the hatch. Hurley runs off a list of things he thinks are in there, describing some sort of 50’s bomb shelter with tv dinners and twinkies. Locke says he thinks hope is inside. Suddenly a bird flies off. They get a little further ahead. A sound stops them. Kate and Jack see a whiff of black smoke. Then trees start flying everywhere. Locke takes his pack off and approaches the source. Jack freaks out, following him. Locke seems calm. A tree is suddenly uprooted next to him, knocking him over. He looks up, terrified.
