Pilot 2

  • Written By: JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber
  • Directed By: JJ Abrams

We open with a summary of the previous episode, and then get into the new one:

Jack, Charlie and Kate are walking back from their expedition to the cockpit. Charlie is stressing, asking Jack if there's anything coming from the transceiver. Kate asks Charlie what he was doing in the bathroom. He tells her he was getting sick, and makes a self-deprecating remark about being a coward. Kate kindly tells him he's not a coward.

Charlie flashes back to his experience of the crash: He's nervously tapping the arm of his seat with his ring, and eyeing the lavatories. He notices that the flight attendant is talking about him with the other crew. He gets up, pushing past Jack. He rattles the handles on the aft lavs, finding them locked. He moves forward, going through rows, pushing past Boone and Shannon to cross over to the other aisle. There is a sharp jolt, and the crew follows Charlie to the 1st class lavs, where he's locked himself in. He fishes his stash from his shoe and takes a hit. The crew bangs on the door, telling him to open the door. Desperate, Charlie goes to flush his stash, but before he can pull the handle, the plane starts diving. He comes out of the lav, almost getting hit by a service cart. He dashes down the aisle, looking for a free seat. He ducks into a row, straps himself in and grabs a mask

Credits over Shannon laying on the beach in her bikini. Boone asks her to sort through the luggage with the others. She blows him off. Claire asks if Boone is her boyfriend and Shannon and Shannon says he's her brother "God's friggin gift to humanity." Claire looks at Shannon's flat belly, saying she used to have a stomach. Shannnon asks her if she knows what the baby is. Claire says no, and that she hasn't felt the baby move since yesterday.

Cut to the beach, where Jin is searching tidepools for edible sea life. Michael approaches Sun, asking if she's seen Walt. Sun shakes her head, trying to tell him she doesn't speak English. Jun gestures angrily at her, telling her to button the top of her sweater. Michael says he's sorry and walks off.

Cut to the forest, where Walt is walking around, calling for Vincent. He comes across a pair of handcuffs. Michael finds him and scolds him for wandering off.

Scene opens on Sawyer and Sayid beating the crap out of each other. Michael is trying to break them up. Our intrepid threesome come back from their trek, and SuperJack splits up the pugilistic pair. It seems Sawyer, upon seeing the handcuffs Walt and Michael brought back, has assumed that Sayid was being transported as a prisoner, and probably a terrorist.  Kate finally gets pissed off and tells them both to cool it, and says they found the transceiver and asks if anyone can help get it working. Sayid says he can, much to Sawyer's chagrin. Hurley tries to get them to calm down and gets insulted by Sawyer in the process. Boone asks Jack if they found any survivors in the cockpit and Jack tells him no. Sayid wanders off to fix the transceiver. Rose tells Jack he should check out Shrapnel guy.

Cut to Sayid and Hurley. They bond over complaining about Sawyer being a chain smoking jackass. They introduce themselves and shake hands. Sayid says he was a military communications officer and that's why he knows how to work the transceiver. He says he fought in the Gulf war, and Hurley says he has a buddy who fought. He asks if Sayid was Air Force or Army. Sayid says he was Republican Guard.

Cut to Kate standing in the water, bathing. Gratuitous bra and panties shot that we've all seen in the promos. Kate turns to see Sun behind her, trying to tell her something, and looking at her a little bit sadly (and jealously.)

Cut to Sayid telling Kate that he's gotten the transceiver working, but he's not getting reception, and that they might be able to get a signal if they go to higher ground.

Cut to where SuperJack is working on Shrapnel Guy. Kate asks how he's doing, and he says he's not sure if he'll make it or not, but he's going to work on him. Kate tells him she's going on a hike. He's worried, tells her not to go, to wait for him to finish working on Shrapnel Guy. She tells him they have to go now, because the battery might not last. He warns her to be careful and run if she sees anything (duh.)

Jin and Sun are down at the shore, preparing the seafood they'd found. Jin smacks Sun's hand when she tries to help. He walks off. She stares after him, and unbuttons her top button while his back is turned.

Jin offers some of the food to Hurley, who laughs it off, saying he's not hungry enough to eat it.

Michael and Walt on the beach. Walt is reading a Green Lantern comic with a charging polar bear. Michael mentions that the comic is in Spanish, and asks if Walt reads Spanish. Walt says he just found the comic. Michael promises Walt that if they get home, he'll get him a new dog. Walt walks off.

Charlie is off in the trees, and takes another hit from his stash.

Jack and Hurley on the beach. Jack asks Hurley to go search for antibiotics.

Boone approaches Shannon, who's sitting on the beach, staring at a dead body. She mentions that it's the guy from the gate who wouldn't give them their seats in first class, and that by doing so, he saved their lives. Boone asks her to come help them clear some wreckage, he tells her she's being worthless just sitting there. Shannon flips out, crying about how she's been through a trauma. Boone reminds her that they've all been through a trauma, and the only difference is she's the only one who's given herself a pedicure. They descend into bickering. Shannon gets a bug up her ass and declares she's going on the transceiver expedition. Kate tells her that's not a great idea. Charlie comes up and Shannon asks if he's going. He asks if she's going, she says yes, and Charlie says he's definitely going. Kate, tiring of the nonsense, says they can all go, but they have to leave now.

Sawyer's sitting on a piece of wreckage, reading a letter, and watching the hiking party heading out. He decides to tag along, giving Kate some lip while he's at it.

Some Dramatic! shots of our new adventure crew hiking up the mountain.

Jack and Michael on the beach, as Jack is looking through luggage for a blade. Jack asks how Walt's doing and how old he is. Michael has to think for a moment about it. He says Walt is more worried about the dog. Jack mentions that he saw a dog in the forest when he woke up.

Locke is setting up a backgammon board when Walt approaches, curious about the game, asking if it's like checkers. Locke asks Walt if he plays checkers with his dad. Walt says, no mentioning he lives with his mom,  in Australia. Locke mentions that Walt has no accent and Walt says they moved around a lot and says his mom  just died. Locke tells Walt he must be having a bad month. Locke tells Walt about the history of the game. "Two players, two sides, one is light, one is dark." Then he looks carefully at Walt, and asks, "Do you want to know a secret?"

Claire is sitting on some plane seats on the beach, writing in a book. Jin approaches her, offering his food. Claire refuses at first, but then accepts. Shortly after taking a bite, she sits up, shocked, and puts a hand on her belly. She stands up, laughing with relief, grabbing Jin's hand (much to his shock) and making him feel her baby kicking.

Our adventure gang is now way up the mountain in the jungle. Sawyer goes all testosterone and hollers at Sayid that they should check the radio. Sayid hollers back, saying they're not up high enough yet. Suddenly a loud noise gets everyone's attention. Whatever it is starts approaching them. Everyone but Sawyer starts running. Sawyer pulls out a gun and shoots, laying waste to... a polar bear! Charlie confirms that the bear is much too small to have been what killed the pilot.

Jack is getting ready to work on Shrapnel Guy, explaining to Hurley what he needs to do. Jack asks Hurley to hold their patient down. Hurley declines, saying he's not so good around blood. Jack goes to pull the shrapnel out. Hurley makes the mistake of looking, and passes out.

Back to our dead bear, Kate asks Sawyer where he got the gun. Sawyer says he got the gun off of one of the bodies, a US marshal. Sayid and Sawyer argue about who the prisoner was. Kate takes the gun from Sawyer, and asks how to take the gun apart. Sawyer gets in her face, saying he knows her type. Kate wanders off by herself for a moment, preparing for...

Her flashback: Kate and Shrapnel Guy are sitting side by side on the plane, and he's giving her shit. Camera pans down and we see... the handcuffs are on her! The plane starts to do its boogie, and Kate tells Shrapnel Guy that she has one favor to ask him. Before we find out what, the plane nosedives, Shrapnel Guy gets beaned and knocked out and Kate has to struggle, trying to reach the oxygen mask. She gets the keys off of him and uncuffs herself, then puts her mask on, and his, just before the tail blows off.

Jack's working on Shrapnel Guy, who wakes up and immediately demands to know: "where is she?"

Our adventurers have moved on, and are now on top of the mountain. They get signal on the transceiver, but discover that there's something already broadcasting. Sayid tunes in carefully, trying to get a clearer broadcast. Charlie recognizes that the message is in French and delightedly says he's never been so happy to hear the French. Sayid asks if anyone speaks French to translate the message. Boone says Shannon does, since she spent a year in Paris. Shannon declines, saying her year was spent drinking, not studying. Sayid notices the batteries are dying, and we hear more of the message, part of it in English, and a series of numbers. Sayid says that the numbers are a reiteration, a recording saying how many times the messages has repeated. He thinks, trying to count how many time the message has repeated. Shannon finally gives in and listens closely to the message:

"I'm alone now. I'm on the island alone. Please someone come. The others, they're dead. It killed them. It killed them all."

Sayid has counted, and says the message has been playing for 16 years. Our adventurers try to figure this out, and the episode ends on Charlie famously asking: "Guys, where are we?"
