Numbers

Beach: Hurley, Jin and Michael are trying to re-build the raft. Jack comes up and checks things out. Michael tells him that things are going well, and that he has people standing guard all the time to make sure no one sabotages things again. He tells Jack he was thinking that passing ships might not see the raft, and that maybe it would be a good idea to have something to send a distress signal with. Jack says Sayid might be able to come up with something, but he wouldn’t have anything to power it with. Hurley notes that Danielle had batteries.

Jack and Hurley approach Sayid for information on where Danielle is. Sayid refuses. Jack asks about the maps, and Sayid, angered, says he has no idea what they all mean. In the midst of explaining some of the notes Danielle made, about “the dark territory” Hurley is shuffling through some of the notes. He pauses, seeing a page with a series of numbers written on it.

Beach, night. Hurley wakes Sayid up and asks him about Danielle’s notes. Sayid is cranky, and says he and Shannon haven’t figured much out yet. Sayid says he thought at one time the numbers might be coordinates. Hurley asks more questions about how Sayid found Danielle. Sayid warns him that he only found a trap. Hurley walks off.

--flashback—

Hurley and his family are talking to reporters about the big win. He introduces his mom and his brother and his grandfather. He says he’s going to give his grandfather a vacation, since he’s worked 3 jobs for 52 years. His grandfather suddenly grabs his arm, and collapses.

Caves: Hurley’s filling water bottles, Charlie approaches. Hurley gets defensive before Charlie even asks him what he’s doing. Charlie notices that there are several bottles, and asks if Hurley’s going somewhere, which he denies at first, but then says he’s just taking a walk, looking for new fishing areas. Charlie offers to come with, Hurley turns him down sharply. Charlie is left bewildered.

Beach: Locke approaches Claire, who’s just sitting around, and asks if she can help with something he’s building. She’s skeptical about how much she can do in her condition, but agrees.

Caves: Sayid approaches Jack, demanding to know where the map is, and raving about Hurley doing Jack’s dirty work for him. Jack looks bewildered, and Sayid realizes he has no idea what’s going on. Jack asks Charlie, who’s come up behind them, where Hurley is. Charlie says Hurley was acting weird and went for a walk. Sayid realizes Hurley has gone after Danielle.

Beach: Sayid’s explaining to Shannon that he’s going off for a while. She’s worried, but he assures her he’ll be okay.

Further down the beach: Hurley’s making some progress alone on his trek…

--flashback—

Hurley and his mom are riding in a bright yellow Hummer, rap blasting away, much to Hurley’s mom’s dismay. She asks where he’s taking her, saying she doesn’t like surprises. Hurley says she’ll like this one, and maybe it’ll make up for all the things she’s been through, and mentions his grandfather’s death, and their priest being struck by lightning at the funeral, and his brother moving back home. He says he thinks they’ve had nothing but bad luck since they won the lottery. He says he thinks the money’s cursed. His mom smacks him for blaphemy. He hands her a blindfold to put on as they’re almost at their destination. He pulls up in front of a huge McMansion and leads his mom up, but she trips and injures her ankle. She smells smoke. He looks up and sees a fire in the upper window of the house. Before he can call to report the fire, cops arrive and aim guns at him, and then slap cuffs on him. He looks at his mother and says “no such thing as curses, eh?”

Hurley on his trek finds the cable Sayid found and begins to follow it, calling for Danielle.

--flashback—

Hurley’s having a conversation with his accountant. He talks about Hurley’s business holdings, including a box company in Tustin, and a sneaker company which just had a major fire that killed 8 people. Hurley again grouses at his bad luck. The accountant asks how he picked his numbers. Hurley suddenly thinks that maybe the numbers are cursed. The accountant blows that off, saying there’s no such things as curses. Just then, a body falls past the window behind him.

Beach. Michael and Walt are working on the new raft while Sawyer tries to read (A Wrinkle in Time) Michael gets on Sawyer’s case for not helping. A piece of the raft falls apart, and Michael and Jin start arguing. Sawyer stalks off.

We see Sun sitting just down the beach with Kate, watching Jin. Sun says she thinks Jin will never speak to her again because she humiliated him. She asks Kate if she thinks Jin will go with them on the raft. Kate says she doesn’t know.

Hurley follows the cable in. He hears flies above him and looks up to see a boar strung up in a trap. He keeps going until he realizes he’s standing on metal of some sort. Sayid, Charlie and Jack come up. Sayid tells Hurley to not move, because he’s standing on a pressure trigger which will release a big nasty ball of sharpened sticks. The gang decides they need to replace his weight on the trigger, but Hurley decides he can duck out of the way, and dives. The ball misses him. The others demand to know what he’s doing there. He says he’s there to get a battery. They decide to go with, with Sayid leading.

--flashback—

Hurley is at a hospital, trying to find out where a guy named Lenny is. The desk clerk won’t give him the info without a last name. Behind him, a guy on a rickety ladder is trying to change a lightbulb. Hurley turns around and tells him to stop. He’s approached by a doctor who recognizes him, and asks him what he’s doing back there.

Dayroom, psych ward. The doc brings Hurley up to a room, mentioning that he doesn’t remember Hurley and Leonard being that close. He leaves. Hurley sits down in front of a man who is babbling to himself and playing Connect Four. Hurley talks to him, getting no response. He asks him what the numbers mean. We hear that the guy is reciting the string of Lotto numbers.

Hurley asks where Lenny got the numbers. He talks about how they turned him into a jinx ever since he won the lottery. Lenny suddenly stops and freaks out that Hurley used the numbers. He says Hurley’s opened the box. He says Hurley has to get away from the numbers or it won’t stop. An orderly drags Lenny away, as he’s screaming to Hurley a name (Sam Tumi) and locaiton in Australia where the guy who gave him the numbers is.

Jungle. Our four adventurers are looking around. Sayid finds that the cable goes into the ground. Charlie wanders off, and then calls to the others, saying they have to come look at something.  He’s found a rope bridge spanning a chasm. Sayid says he’d never seen it before. Jack realizes there’s no way Danielle could’ve built it by herself. Hurley starts crossing the bridge. They try to call him back, but he’s determined to cross. They hang back, watching. Hurley makes it across. Charlie decides to cross, saying if Hurley can do it, surely he can. He gets most of the way across when the bridge gives way. He dives the last yard, barely making it, with Hurley’s help. Jack tells Hurley and Charlie to stay put while they find a way around. Hurley says there’s a path there, and he wants to go. Charlie flips out, telling Hurley he’s acting like a lunatic.

--flashback—

Tiny house in the middle of the Australian desert.  A woman answers the door. Hurley asks to speak to her husband. She says he’s been dead for four years.

Inside, Hurley mentions that Leonard used to work for Sam. Sam’s wife confirms that, and says the two knew each other from the US Navy. She asks how Leonard is doing. Hurley says he’s kind of retired. He tells her that Leonard said Sam heard something. She quickly surmises about the numbers. She tells him that Sam and Leonard were stationed at a post monitoring long-wave radio transmissions over the Pacific. One night, 16 years ago, they heard a voice on the radio repeating the numbers over and over. A few days later, there’s a contest to count the number of beans in a jar. Sam guessed using that number, and was exactly on. On their way back, they were in a car accident, where she lost her leg, but Sam didn’t have a scratch. He kept a record of all of the bad things that happened to people around him. Eventually, he tried to stop the curse by killing himself. She asks Hurley what he’s looking for. Hurley tells her he used the numbers to win the lottery, and he thinks he’s cursed. She goes off on him, saying there’s no curse. She says you make your own luck, and don’t blame it on the numbers.

Jungle clearing: Locke is building something with some sticks. Claire says it looks like an animal trap. He asks Claire to hand him a cup of glue and explains that he made the glue. She tells him thanks for giving her something to do, because she’s tired of trying to remember what happened to her. He asks how it’s coming, she says just bits and pieces. Locke says maybe he can help put the bits and pieces together.

Trek: Jack and Sayid find an area that Sayid thinks is familiar. Jack sets off a trip wire which sets off an explosion. Charlie and Hurley, across the way, hear it.

Sayid and Jack are picking through the wreckage of what used to be Danielle’s place. They’re finding nothing. Sayid realizes she knew he’d be back, so she abandoned and booby trapped the place.

Charlie and Hurley are starting their way back, trying to find the source of the explosion. Charlie demands to know what’s going on, why they’re out there. Hurley turns around and tells Charlie firmly that he’s not crazy, that he has his reasons. Charlie says he has a right to know. Hurley starts to tell him when a shot rings out, and then another. They realize someons’s shooting at them and take off running, in different directions. Hurley trips and falls and comes up with a rifle n his face.He realizes it’s Danielle.

She asks him who he is. He starts to explain and she realizes he was on the plane. He tells her he came to ask her about her notes and shows her the piece of paper with the numbers. He begs her to explain. She says she doesn’t know. Hurley starts raving, about the monster, etc.  and gets in her face, saying he wants some answers. She puts the gun down.

She tells him that her ship picked up the transmission repeating the numbers and changed course to find the source. When they shipwrecked, they searched the island, and finally found a radio tower, up by the black rock. Some continued to search for the meaning of the numbers while they waited for rescue, but then the sickness came. When her team was gone, she went back to the tower and changed the transmission. He asks again about the numbers, saying they’re cursed. She agrees with him that they are. He sighs in relief and thanks her for agreeing with him and grabs her in a big bear hug.

Sayid and Jack are still picking through the wreckage of Danielle’s place. Jack says they need to find Hurley and Charlie. Sayid finds the remains of the picture of Nadia. Charlie stumbles in, explaining that they were shot at. They get ready to go find Hurley, but he comes up and hands Jack a battery, and tells Sayid Danielle says hi.

He asks why she hasn’t told anyone. She says it doesn’t matter, with all that’s gone on. He tells her it’s good luck that she and her baby will have birthdays close together. She smiles, asking if he believes in luck. He says he believes in a lot of things. He finishes the work on his project and turns it over, and we see that it’s a cradle. He tells her happy birthday.

Charlie comes upon Hurley, who’s drying a shirt over a fire. He sits down and mentions that Hurley was going to tell him something before they were shot at.  Hurley says he thinks the plane crash was his fault, and says he thinks he was a jinx. Charlie starts denying that sort of thing could happen, and then starts explaining about what he was doing when the plane was crashing. He tells Hurley that now that he’s shared something intimate, it’s his turn. Hurley pauses and then says that back home, he’s worth $156 mil. Charlie thinks he’s joking and storms off. Hurley sits there, bewildered and depressed

We see a shot of a hatch in the jungle and on closeup, we see The Numbers engraved on it.
