...In Translation Today’s eyeball belongs to Jin. He’s standing on the beach, staring out at the ocean --flashback— Jin is standing in a plush office in front of a very serious-looking man. The man asks Jin why he wants to marry his daughter. He asks the usual questions about Jin’s future, his intentions. He asks what Jin’s father thinks. Jin says that his father is dead. Jin speaks honestly of his love for Sun. Her father is convinced, and Jin shakes his hand. Beach: Jin looks down the beach and sees Sun, in a bikini. He flips out, running over to her and trying to get her to cover up. They argue. Everyone else stares, wondering if they should do something. Sun trips as Jin is trying to tug her away, and Michael flips out, running up to Jin and getting in his face. Sun slaps Michael, much to his shock. Sun and Jin walk away. --commercial break-- Caves: Jin is looking at a watch and asking Sun what’s going on with her and Michael. She denies anything. --flashback— Sun is changing after the first stage of their wedding. Jin comes in. Sun tells him she wishes his father had been there to see them marry. Jin is silent, and Sun apologizes if he’s upset her. She asks him to fasten her dress. He says he’d rather see her out of it, and kisses her neck. She asks about their honeymoon. He tells her he wishes he could go, but her father has business for him to attend to. He hands her a flower, and promises that when his management training is over, they’ll have a beautiful honeymoon. Beach: Sun sneaks up to where Michael is working on his raft. She apologizes for slapping him, and tries to explain that she did so so Jin wouldn’t attack him. Michael blows her off. Golf course. Jin is whacking away. Hurley approaches, and tries to talk to him, trying to get him to go fishing. Jin ignores him. Beach: Shannon is working on tying knots for a project. Sayid comes up and starts flirting with her. She flirts back. Raft: Walt brings Michael some wires. Michael starts telling him how great New York is, and how he can’t wait to show Walt the city. Walt seems unimpressed and wanders off with the dog. Jack approaches, praising Michael’s work on it. Jack says there’s talk about who’s going on the raft. Michael says there are only four spaces. Sawyer approaches, saying he’d bought himself a space on the raft with some supplies. Night, beach: Kate is trying to talk to Sun about Jin. Sun explains that he wasn’t always like that. Suddenly, a commotion interrupts them. The raft is burning! The gang tries to put the fire out, to no avail. Michael turns to see Sun, and demands to know where Jin is. --commercial break— The rest of the gang try to get Michael to back off from Sun. Sun runs off. Caves: Jin is pawing through a cart, looking for salve. Sun approaches. She realizes he’s been burned. She asks if he did it, angry because Michael was trying to get them off the island. Jin, angry at her talking about Michael, walks away. --flashback— Jin and Sun’s father are talking business. Sun’s father explains that he wants to promote Jin, but needs him to take a message to the Environmental Minister, that he is “displeased” about reports about one of his factories. Environmental Minister’s house: Jin comes in, and gives the message to him. The minister, shocked that the words are all Jin seems to want to deliver, gives him his daughter’s sharpei puppy in gratitude. Beach. Boone is working on a signal fire. Sayid approaches him, and explains that he thinks he and Shannon might soon become more than friends. Boone takes it all rather poorly, and explains to Sayid that Shannon will probably use him and dump him. Dawn, Jungle: Jin wakes up, alone. He goes to the stream to wash his hands. Sawyer comes up behind him and clocks him. --commercial break— Beach: Shannon’s working on making a shelter. Sayid approaches her, declining to help. She quickly figures that Boone’s gotten to him. She stalks through the jungle, finding Locke, demanding to know where Boone is. Locke, rather disinterested, is gutting some small animal. She tells him to give Boone the message to leave Sayid out of whatever problem he has with her. Locke asks if Shannon likes Sayid, and if she does, then her brother shouldn’t be any of her concern. He tells her that everyone on the island gets a new life, and maybe it’s time to start hers. Sawyer is marching Jin, tied up, through the jungle, pushing him around. --flashback— Sun has prepared a special meal for Jin. He’s very appreciative, but before they can eat, his cel phone rings. He turns it off, saying that this time, it’s just for them. He goes to take a bite, but then their home line rings. He takes the call. Office. Mr. Paik is very upset, since one of his factories has been closed. He indicates a goon standing aside, who will demonstrate how to deliver a message. Jin and the goon drive to the Environmental Minister’s house, and it quickly becomes apparent that the goon means to kill. Jin enters the house first, and starts beating the hell out of the man, in front of his wife and daughter. He whispers to him that he just saved his life. Back at home, Jin comes in and starts cleaning up his bloody mess. This is the scene we saw in Sun’s episode. She demands to know what happened. He won’t tell her. She slaps him. He tells her that he does whatever her father tells him to do. She leaves, and Jin stares at himself in the mirror, shaking. Beach: Sawyer has dragged Jin there. A crowd gathers around. Michael tries to get into his face, Jack tries to get everyone to calm down. Jin looks around, not understanding what’s being said. Sun is standing aside, he asks her something. Michael thinks Jin is saying something to him, and rushes past Jack to punch him. They start exchanging punches and insults. Sun finally screams at Michael, in English, to leave him alone. She says that Jin didn’t burn the raft. The assembled gang looks on, bewildered. --commercial break— The gang are all shocked that Sun has understood them all this time. Sun tells Michael that the raft was already on fire when Jin got there, and that he burned his hand trying to put it out. Michael asks why Jin ran. Sun asks Jin about that. He doesn’t respond. She says her husband is not a liar. Sawyer digs her about lying. Locke intervenes, asking why anyone would burn the raft, and reminds the gang that they have other people on the island who have it out for them. Sun again insists that Jin didn’t do it. The crowd disperses. Sun approaches Jin, who walks away. Michael stalks around the wreckage of the raft, complaining that he can’t salvage anything. Walt looks on. He says it’s okay that the raft didn’t work. Michael takes him aside, promising he’ll make another one. Walt offers to help. Caves: Sun watches Jin pack. She tries to talk to him, to explain. He ignores her. She tells him, in English, that she was going to leave him, but she decided against it, because she believed he still loved her. She switches back to Korean, asking if they can go back to the beginning and start over. --flashback— A fish-filled dock on a river. Jin, in a suit, walks down to the end of the pier. An old man there recognizes him—it’s his father. Jin tells his father he’s sorry, and to forgive him for being ashamed of him. His father hugs him. They start working on the fishing equipment. Jin’s father asks him about Sun. Jin tells him that Sun doesn’t talk to him anymore, and doesn’t understand that it’s her father’s fault they’re estranged. Jin tells his father that there is a scheduled trip, that Sun’s father wants him to deliver watches to clients in Sydney and LA. His father says he should let that be the last thing he does for his boss, and to stay in LA. Caves: Jin tells Sun that it’s too late for them to start over. He leaves her sobbing. --commercial break-- Beach, night: Shannon approaches Sayid. They kiss. He asks what that was for. She tells him what Locke told her about a new life. Caves: Locke approaches Walt, who’s playing backgammon alone. Walt says Hurley owes him $83k, but he’s going to give him a chance to earn it back. Locke asks where Michael is, Walt says he’s down at the beach. Walt asks about Locke’s dad. Locke says his dad was not a good man. Locke asks Walt why he burned the raft. He promises not to tell anyone. Walt finally answers that he just didn’t want to move anymore. He likes it on the island and doesn’t want to go anywhere. Locke says he likes the island, too. Beach, morning: Michael is sifting through the wreck of the raft, trying to put it together again. Jin comes up, carrying a bundle of bamboo. Michael realizes he’s there to help. Hurley crosses in, heading down the beach, listening to his Walkman. He passes Sayid and Shannon, canoodling. Sun, further down the beach, in her bikini, lets the blanket around her blow away, and stands in the surf, enjoying the waves against her bare legs. Charlie brings Claire a drink. Hurley sits down, listening to his music, which suddenly stops. He taps his player, realizing the batteries have died, and curses his bad luck. --end episode 17-- |
