Outlaws

Today’s opening is a child’s face. He’s in his bedroom, sleeping. His mother wakes him up, telling him “he’s here.” There’s a man banging on his door, demanding it be opened. His mother tells him to get under the bed, that “he” will think he’s still at his grandparents, and no matter what, don’t come out. He crawls under and hides. From his vantage point, we see his mother goes out, closing the door behind her, to confront the man who’s screaming at her. The child listens, frightened at what’s going on outside. They argue, she pleads. There’s a shot, and she’s silent. The man strides into the bedroom, his cowboy boots clicking on the floor. He looks around. He sits down on the bed. There’s another shot, and his legs go limp.

Sawyer wakes up, sweating and startled, from his dream. He hears grunting and growling. A boar is going through his stuff. He shines a flashlight on it. The boar takes off, dragging Sawyer’s tent with him. Sawyer gives chase, waking up the whole beach. He gets into the jungle and has lost the boar’s trail. He looks around in the dark, and suddently starts hearing voices all around him.

Dawn. Sawyer is trying to clean up his living area. Sayid approaches, and asks about what happened. Sawyer explains about the boar. Sayid teases him. Sawyer starts to walk off, then turns around, and asks about what Sayid heard in the jungle. Sayid says he thought he heard whispering, and asks why, and if Sawyer heard it. Sawyer denies it and walks off.

--flashback—

Sawyer and a ladyfriend come into a hotel room. They fall to the bed, making out. Suddenly they’re interrupted. An associate of Sawyer’s is sitting in the room. Sawyer sends the woman downstairs to the bar, saying he’ll get her later. She leaves, and Sawyer grabs the man, slamming him against the wall, saying he swore he’d kill him if he ever saw him again. The man hands him a paper, saying it should make up for a bad job. He says he’s found the man Sawyer has been chasing. He explains about the guy in the folder, that he fits the profile of Sawyer’s nemesis. He says the guy is in Sydney.

Jungle. Kate hands her gun back to Jack, who puts it back in the case, and asks if anyone was curious about where the guns came from. She says no, they all assumed the guns came from the marshall, who was travelling alone. Jack stashes the case, and Kate asks if he got all the guns back. He says all except one, Sawyer’s. Kate says she can get the gun back from him. Jack says she should let him keep the gun, because he doesn’t want her to owe Sawyer anything.

Caves. Charlie is fiddling with some metal, trying to make something. Claire approaches him. He barely responds to her greeting. She sits down next to him. Still working with his project, he asks how she’s feeling. She says she feels very pregnant. She tells him she had some dreams last night, and that Charlie was in them. She asks if he wants to go for a walk. He turns her down, saying he has something to do.

Jungle path. Sawyer is wandering around, and finds his tarp, against a tree. He picks it up and starts to head back to the beach, but on the way he hears more voices, and then hears the boar charging him. He runs, dropping the tarp, but the boar catches up to him, and knocks him into a puddle.

Beach: Kate is teasing a very muddy Sawyer about the mess in his living area, and his loud complaints about the boar harassing him. He breaks out his gun, saying he’s going to go hunt the boar down. Kate complains, saying he doesn’t know anything about tracking and that Sawyer’s only going to get himself in trouble. He blows her off, and storms off into the jungle.

--flashback—

Sawyer walking along a pier in Sydney. He goes into a welding shop. He talks to a man there, and makes arrangements to buy a handgun. The man reminds him not to rat on him if he gets caught with the gun, since Australia doesn’t allow citizens to own them. The man cautions him about using the gun to kill someone, to be sure he really wants to do it.

Just off of the beach, Hurley and Charlie are hauling Ethan’s body off to be buried. Charlie insists he doesn’t need the help—he killed Ethan, he can bury him. Hurley wonders if Ethan’s going to stay dead or come back alive to hunt them down. Charlie doesn’t respond to Hurley’s hyperbole, just starts digging. Hurley stops, asking if Charlie is okay. Charlie doesn’t respond.

Hurley approaches Sayid and asks him about post traumatic stress disorder, thinking Charlie might not be well, and asks him to talk to Charlie

Jungle: Sawyer is walking around, trying to track his boar. Kate approaches and disses his tracking skills. She says she’ll help him if he’ll give her anything she asks for later. He agrees.

Night, Jungle: Kate and Sawyer are sitting by a fire. Sawyer breaks out a mini bottle of booze. Kate asks for a bottle and he hands one over. They commence playing a tense game of “I Never” where we find out that both have killed someone, and Kate was once married among other things.

Dream sequence. Sawyer’s father in his dream turns into his boar nemesis. Kate wakes him up. They find that the boar has ransacked their camp. They hear rustling in the trees. Sawyer draws his gun. Locke comes through and says hello. He asks about what happened. He sits for a while, and tells a story about how his sister died when she was young, and his foster mother thought that a dog that came to the house was the child reincarnated.

--flashback—

Sawyer pulls up to the food wagon he’s been directed to to find his nemesis. He faces the man, and can’t quite do it, so he leaves.

Bar, Sydney. Sawyer asks for another hit, which the bartender is unsure of. Another guy at the end of the bar comments about Australians thinking Americans can’t drink. He then tells Sawyer that he’s misplaced his wallet and asks for help. Sawyer sets him up. We shortly see that the guy in question is Jack’s father. They sit together and drink for a while. Jack’s father explains a bit about his past, but no names. He comments about how the Red Sox will never win. He talks about his son, and says if he could talk to him, he would say thanks for what he did, but he won’t call because he’s weak. He asks Sawyer if the business he has will ease his suffering. Sawyer says yes. Jack’s dad encourages him to take care of it.

Night, rain. Sawyer again at the food wagon. He watches the man taking trash out. He loads his gun.

Charlie is opening coconuts with his new tool. Sayid approaches and sits down next to him. Charlie quickly surmises that he’s being checked up on. Charlie says he has no remorse for killing Ethan. Sayid tells a story about killing someone during the war, and how he still thinks about it. Charlie is resistant for a moment but then asks for advice. Sayid tells him to remember he’s not alone, and to not pretend he is.

Jungle: Saywer and Kate find evidence that the boar is around. They hear squeals. Sawyer finds a boar piglet. He tries to use it as bait to get the big one. Kate kicks him and stalks off.

--flashback—

Sawyer stalks up to the man and shoots him. He brings out his letter, and starts to read. The man, dying, tells him he’s not Sawyer, and confesses about gambling debts. It soon becomes clear that Sawyer’s been used as an unwitting hit man. The man dies. Shaking, Sawyer stands up, staring at him.

Jungle: Sawyer’s stalking through, looking for his prey. He finds him. He draws his gun and aims. The boar stands there, looking at him. Kate is standing aside, watching. Sawyer lowers the gun and looks back at Kate, blowing it all off, and setting back for camp.

Beach: Charlie approaches Claire, who’s watching the raft being built, and Walt playing with Vincent. He asks if she wants to take a walk now. She smiles, he helps her up and they walk down the beach together.

Jungle: Sawyer approaches Jack, who’s breaking up wood for the signal fires. Sawyer points his gun at Jack. Jack is nonplussed, and realizes Sawyer is joking. Sawyer hands the gun over. Jack gives him a bit of crap about it, Sawyer says he made a deal with Kate, and teases Jack a little about that. Jack makes the same comment that his dad made about the Sox never winning the Series. Sawyer stops cold, and asks a few questions, quickly determining that the man he knew in the bar was Jack’s father, and learning that the man is dead. Jack asks why Sawyer wants to know. Sawyer pauses, then says no reason, and walks off.
