Hearts and Minds Our eyeball opening of the day is Boone, who is hanging back in the trees, watching Shannon, who’s reading and talking to Sayid. He’s brought Shannon a present—a box of cute shoes. They giggle. Hurley approaches Boone to ask why he and Locke haven’t come back with any fresh boar in their daily sojourns into the jungle. Boone tells him they just haven’t caught anything yet. --flashback— Boone and an anonymous blonde are walking off of a tennis court. His cell phone is ringing. He answers it. It’s Shannon, her voice is shaky, she yells at someone in the room to get away from her. Boone, worried, tells her to tell him where she is and he’ll come get her. She tells him she’s in Australia. Boone approaches Sayid, and tells him to stay away from Shannon. Sayid asks what if he doesn’t. Locke calls to Boone to come join him to find fresh tracks. Boone glares back at Sayid as he walks off. Locke warns Boone to not make an enemy of Sayid, since he has skills they need. Boone complains about Sayid hitting on Shannon. He also tells Locke people are starting to ask why they don’t come back from their “hunting trips” with anything. Locke tells him that what they’re doing with the hatch is far more important. --commercial break— Hurley is in the jungle, breaking leaves off of a plant, Jack approaches him. Hurley asks him about some digestive trouble he’s having. Jack asks him about his eating habits, and determines that Hurley needs to eat more protein. Hurley says that there’s no more boar, and that he can’t eat any of the fish Jin has been catching because he thinks Jin hates him for turning down his offer of food shortly after they crashed. Kate’s picking through the underbrush, looking for fruit. She sees that Jack is watching her. He says he wasn’t hiding, just didn’t want to interrupt her. She tells him she’s collecting fruit seeds, and leads him to a clearing, where Sun has set up a small garden. Sun smiles at them, saying nothing. Jack comments that it’s good she’s doing this, as they’re running out of boar. Kate suggests that maybe Locke is holding out on them. Boone comments to Locke that the hatch is sealed shut. He asks what the mush that Locke is mixing up is. Locke says it’s “for later.” Boone asks why they’re coming there to just stare at the hatch, doing nothing. Shaman Locke tells a story about Michelangelo staring at a block of marble, working. Boone asks again why they’re just sitting there, Locke says they have to figure a way to open a hatch with no lock, no handle, no easy way to open it. Boone stares at him. --flashback— Boone knocks on a door. A man answers. He tells him he’s looking for Shannon, that he’s her brother. Shannon comes out, dressed to go out. Boone’s confused at her blowing him off. She tells him that it’s not a good time, that they should get together tomorrow. She casually pushes her hair back, revealing a bruise on her forehead. He agrees. Beach. Hurley approaches Jin, and tries to get him to explain where the fish are, so he can go fishing himself. Jin blows him off with a gesture that basically says, run along, silly boy. Jungle. Boone tells Locke they have to tell people what they’ve found. Locke says they’re not ready. Boone says he at least has to tell Shannon. Locke asks why he cares so much what she thinks and does. Boone explains that she’s smart and special, and says he can’t keep lying to her. Locke asks whether he can’t, or just can’t stand the way Shannon makes him feel because he’s lying to her. Boone insists Shannon can keep a secret, that he has to get her off his back. Locke asks if he’s sure, Boone says yes. Locke agrees, then clocks Boone with the handle of a knife when his back is turned. --commercial break— Boone wakes up to find he’s tied up. Locke is mixing his goo again. Boone asks what the heck is going on. Locke says he’s doing this for Boone’s own good, to let go of something. He applies some of the paste to the wound on Boone’s head. Locke sticks a knife just out of Boone’s reach, and says he’ll be able to cut himself free and head back to camp once he’s properly motivated. Boone stretches, but can’t quite reach the knife. He calls for help --flashback— Boone in a police station, explaining to an officer about Shannon’s abusive boyfriend. They’re interrupted by a couple of officers dragging a protesting Sawyer in. The officer asks why their last names are different, and whether Shannon is married. Boone tells him that Shannon was once married but isn’t any longer, and also explains that he and Shannon are step-siblings, whose parents married when Boone was 10 and Shannon was 8. The officer notes no blood relation. Boone tries to name drop his mother and her business. The officer tells Boone that without a direct complaint from Shannon, they’re not able to do anything about her abusive boyfriend. Harbor. Boone approaches Shannon’s boyfriend and tells him to break up with her, saying that he’s the third boyfriend he’ll have paid to leave. The boyfriend protests. Boone offers him $25k to leave. The boyfriend agrees to $50k. Boone writes him a check on the spot. Garden. Kate babbling to Sun, who ignores her. She says something amusing, and Sun smiles. Kate realizes that Sun has understood her, and therefore must speak English. Sun begs her to not tell anyone. Beach. Jin and Hurley are trying to find fish. Hurley is using his shirt as a makeshift net, and having no luck. Jin points to the fish he’s just caught. Hurley complains, telling Jin fine, he’s won, and starts to stumble out of the water. He steps on a sea urchin, and starts hollering for help. Comedy ensues, with Hurley demanding Jin pee on his foot to stop the venom. Jungle. Locke approaches Sayid, who is using a magnet on a needle to make a compass. Locke tells Sayid that Boone is out hunting, but doesn’t think he’ll catch anything. Sayid tells Locke that he’s trying to make sense of Danielle’s maps. Locke notes the compass Sayid is making, and reminisces about being in Scouts. He tells Sayid he wasn’t the most popular kid around and then walks off,, handing his compass to Sayid, saying he doesn’t need it anymore. Jungle. Boone is woozy, half asleep. He hears Shannon calling him for help. She says she’s tied up, too. Suddenly, he hears the Gargantubeast crashing through the trees. Shannon screams. He tells her to hang on, that he’s coming. He screams, stretching out to reach the knife. He quickly cuts himself free, and runs off to find her. She’s tied to a tree. He cuts her loose. The monster approaches. They run, finding a stand of trees to hide in. They crouch together. The shadow of the monster falls over them and then leaves. All is quiet. Suddenly, the monster returns, attacking the trees. --commercial break— Sayid and Jack are wandering through the jungle. Sayid asks Jack where he thinks North is. Jack points out where he thinks north is, based on the position of the sun. Sayid shows him Locke’s compass, which is off by a significant margin. Sayid says a normal magnetic variation might explain a few degrees, but not that much. Sayid says the compass is defective, and mentions Locke gave it to him. Jack asks where he last saw Locke, Sayid says about a mile east of them. Trees. Boone and Shannon are still huddled close. Silence. Boone peers out, looking for the monster. Shannon asks what Boone did to Locke to piss him off. Boone says he did nothing, and says they should go back to camp. --flashback— Boone bursts into Shannon’s house, telling her to pack her things, because they’re leaving. The boyfriend comes home. Shannon hesitates. The boyfriend taunts Boone. Shannon is silent. Boone realizes that he’s been set up. The boyfriend says Shannon is just getting what she’s owed, since Boone’s mother took all of her father’s money after he died. Boone realizes Shannon has set him up before. He starts in on her, the boyfriend attacks him. He leaves. Beach. Locke is sitting, watching the waves. Jack approaches, asking him if he’s seen any ships yet. Locke says no, but he’s patient. Jack comments that it’s been a while since they’ve talked. Jack asks where Boone is, and comments that they’ve been attached at the hip. Jack asks about the boar hunting. Locke says he thinks they’ve left the valley, sensing a new predator has come. Kate asks Sun if anyone else knows she speaks English. Sun says only Michael knows, and explains that she can’t tell Jin that she took lessons. Kate doesn’t understand, but Sun asks whether she’s ever lied to a man she’s loved. Kate says nothing. Beach. Hurley babbles at Jin, trying to figure out of he speaks English. Jin brings over some ume. Hurley takes it, surmising that it must be some way to earn back honor, and get a fish from Jin. He eats it, and then promptly upchucks. Jack hands some aspirin over to Charlie, and offers a hand with re-building the signal fires. He notes that Charlie hasn’t been at the caves much. Charlie says he needed a change of scenery. Jack asks how he’s doing. Charlie asks about what—week 2 of heroin withdrawal or Claire being missing, still. Jack says he gave him aspirin for the withdrawal. They grin. Jack indicates Locke and asks Charlie what he thinks of him. Charlie says he thinks Locke is completely off his nut—or so he thought when they first met, but after saving his life, he trusts him totally. Caves. Michael pulls a box out of his backpack and looks through it. He watches Walt playing with Vincent. Hurley approaches, and notes that he’s found his bag, and complains about having stepped on the urchin. Jin approaches, and offers Hurley a fish, cleaned and gutted already. Hurley is surprised and thanks him. Jin wanders off, talking to Sun. They walk past Kate, who watches them. Jack approaches her, noting that the couple look happy. He tells Kate to put out her hand and hands over some guava seeds. She grins. Jungle. Boone and Shannon are bickering, Shannon complaining about Boone getting so close to Locke the freak who tied them up. He defends Locke. Then he tells Shannon about the hatch and explains that’s probably why Locke tied them up. Suddenly, the monster is back. They run, screaming. Shannon gets taken. Boone calls after her. --commercial break— Boone’s rushing through the jungle, calling out for Shannon. --flashback— Boone in his hotel room, nursing a bruised jaw. A knock on the door—it’s Shannon. She’s crying, tells him that Brian took the money and left. Boone is unsympathetic. Shannon taunts him, saying she knew he’d bring the money, because he’s in love with her. Boone tries to deny it, but fails miserably. She says she’s always known. She hovers close to him, whispering in his ear that it’s okay. He succumbs, and they start making out, tumbling to the bed. Darkness. Then a light switched on. Shannon is sitting in a chair, Boone is sitting on the bed. She tells him that they’ll tell his mom that he rescued her, like always, and that they’ll go back to the way things were before. He stares silently. She tells him to get dressed. Jungle, by the river. Boone calls out for Shannon, then sees that the river is running red. He looks up, and sees Shannon lying lifeless on the rocks. He rushes to her, and realizes that she’s dead, shredded to bits. --commercial break— Night. Locke is sitting by the fire. Boone stumbles out of the jungle and attacks him, raving about how the beast killed Shannon. Locke notes that there’s no blood on him, and pushes him back. Boone is confused. Shannon walks by, talking to Sayid. Boone realizes that the goo Locke smeared on his head must’ve been a hallucinogen. Locke questions Boone about what he saw while he was tripping, and how he felt when he thought Shannon had died. Boone, still bewildered, says he felt relieved. Locke takes that as a metaphor, and tells Boone he needs to let Shannon go. --end episode 13-- |
