Whatever The Case May Be

Kate is up a tree, cutting away at some vines. She comes down and hears noises in the brush. She chucks a rock in the direction of the noise, and nails Sawyer, who has been following her. They give each other the third degree. Kate explains she’s out in the wilds looking for food since the local trees are picked clean. Sawyer says he followed her to protect her. In the midst of their bickering, Kate hears something. She follows the sound, and finds a clearing with a lovely waterfall and natural pool. Sawyer decides to go for a swim, and convinces Kate to join him. Their frolicking is soon interrupted, though, as underwater, they see a couple of dead passengers from the plane, still strapped into their seats.

Over the credits, the two come up, sputtering and scared. Sawyer goes back down, to check the bodies over for stuff, much to Kate’s disgust. She follows him down, and while down there, sees a silver case under one of the seats. She obviously recognizes the case. They come up, and Kate asks him for help with the case, explaining that it’s hers. They go down again and retrieve the case. On shore, Kate looks at the case, trying to find a way to open it. Sawyer determines that the case actually isn’t hers, and decides to claim it. Kate says she doesn’t care. Sawyer is skeptical and asks her what the deal is. She walks off, telling him to take it.

Beach: The tide is coming in heavily, and the beach dwellers are trying to retrieve their belongings as they wash out. Sayid and Jack are trying to help, and Sayid expresses confusion about why the tide’s turning so fast.

Jack asks Sayid more about Danielle, trying to get more clues to help find Claire. Sayid reminds him that Danielle is nuts, and that maybe they shouldn’t try to translate the maps. Jack points out a despondent Charlie, and tells Sayid to explain that to him.

Boone approaches Shannon, who’s reading a magazine, and razzes her about doing something useful, She asks him what he’s been doing with Locke, as they’ve been out every day, and teases him about his “new boyfriend.” Boone pauses and then says they’re looking for Claire, getting in another dig about Shannon doing nothing.

Beach, night: Kate is sitting by the fire, glancing in the direction of Sawyer’s tent.

--Flashback--

Kate is in a bank in New Mexico, applying for a loan. She tells the manager that she’s a photographer, there to do a coffee table book. They’re interrupted by robbers invading the bank. The lead of the gang demands that the manager open the vault.

Beach: Kate sneaks up on sleeping Sawyer, and goes for the case, which is wedged between his legs. He catches her, and they wrestle and banter for a bit. She head butts him, and he releases her, complaining and flirting all the time, but she doesn’t get the case. She asks for it. He says no. She walks off.

Beach: Gratuitous shot of Shannon in a bikini, tanning. She rolls over, and unties her top, sunning her back. Sayid walks past her, warning her about how they’re closer to the equator, and the sun may be stronger. She waves it off. He tells her he needs her help translating the papers he got from Danielle, as no one else on the island speaks French. Shannon asks him if Boone put him up to it and he says no, seeming a little surprised that Boone is her brother. He asks her again to help. She turns him down. He pleads.

Sawyer’s trying and failing to open the case by picking the lock. Michael walks past, and tells him the case isn’t going to be picked, teasing him to Hurley’s amusement. Michael tells Sawyer that only a sharp impact will open the case and suggests the axe.

Jungle: Boone brings the axe to Locke, who’s standing in a stand of trees, away from the others. He confirms that no-one saw Boone take the axe, saying that they should keep what they’re doing with the metal thing secret.

Beach: Rose is tugging a piece of fuselage past Charlie. She gets a dig in at him about sitting around and moping instead of helping, reminding him that everyone else has things to be sad about, too. He finally gets up and helps.

Jungle: Sawyer tries futily to bang the case open on a rock. He decides maybe it’ll open if he drops it from the top of a tree. It doesn’t, but Kate, who has been watching, sneaks in and grabs it while he’s still up the tree. He scrambles down and chases her through the jungle, finally catching up to her in some tall grasses. He pins her, they wrestle, he gets it back. He tells her that he’ll make a deal. If she tells him what’s in the case, he’ll give it to her, reminding her they can’t open it anyway. She stays silent

--flashback—

Back in the bank, the leader is demanding the key from the manager. A big guy decides to try to be a hero, and he grabs one of the robbers, who drops his gun. The guy kicks it over to Kate who picks it up, but says she doesn’t know how to use it. The leader grabs her and drags her into a back room. He laughs at her inability to use a gun. And then they start making out.

Beach: Shannon and Sayid are tyring to translate the documents. Shannon’s worried about the math. She complains, saying she can’t do it. He encourages her, and asks where she learned French. She says she learned it from a guy she was seeing while she lived in St. Tropez. Sayid says that’s the best way to learn a language. That softens her a little, and she starts working on the translation again.

Caves: Sun is bringing various plants in. Jack tries to ask her what a certain plant is for. She mimes to him that it’s for headaches. He nods in understanding. Kate comes in, needing to talk privately with Jack. They glance back at Sun, and decide that she’s safe to talk around. Kate reminds Jack that he’s the only one who knows about her past (as far as she knows!) and explains to him about the case, and tells him that it belonged to the marshall, and contained money and guns. She says she needs to get into the case, and she knows where the key is—on the marshall’s body, which has now been buried. She asks Jack to help her get the key. He asks what else is in the case that she needs so badly. She says nothing. He finally agrees to help her, but only if they open the case together.

Beach: Rose and Charlie are lugging things around. She’s smiling and Charlie asks why. She says it’s a beautiful day. He goes off on a pessimist tangent about all the hell they’ve been through. She stops him, and reminds him that no one blames him for what happened to Claire, that he did all he could. He’s quiet. She tells him he needs to ask for help.

Jungle, over a fresh grave: Kate asks Jack why he didn’t burn the marshall with the rest of the dead. Jack says he had to bury him himself. They prepare to dig.

--flashback--

Kate, whom the leader calls Maggie, and the leader are getting ready to go back out, and she wants it to look good, so he roughs her up. He drags her back out again, and tells the manager he’ll kill her if he doesn’t get the key. The manager relents.

Jungle: Coughing and sputtering, they dig up the grave. Kate goes in and gets the wallet. She opens it, and seeing it’s full of maggots, drops it. Jack grabs it and looks through it, saying the key isn’t in there. Kate is distressed. Jack tells her that was good sleight-of-hand and grabs her closed hand, which has the key. She tries to explain, but he takes the key from her and walks away.

Beach: Shannon is trying to translate, coming up with nothing but nonsense phrases. She complains that she needs more time. She says it sounds familiar. Sayid complains that the nonsense now sounds familiar. She barks back, reminding him that it’s not her nonsense, and maybe his little French friend is half baked. He said the translation was a mistake, taking the papers back from her. Shannon storms off, complaining about being useless. Sayid stares silently after her.

Jack approaches Sawyer, asking for the case. He threatens him with withholding antibiotics. Sawyer asks if Jack knows what’s inside, he says no. Saywer gives him the case, but warns him that Kate is a liar.

Jack brings Kate the case, reminding her that they’d open it together

--flashback--

Kate gets shoved into the vault, as the robbers go through the cash. The manager pleads with them to let “the girl” go. The leader laughs and tells him that the whole thing was the girl’s idea. He cocks the gun at the marshal, Kate grabs someone else’s gun and aims it at the leader. She says she was promised no one gets hurt and that if he fires, she will. He tells her she won’t do anything. She shoots him in the leg, and shoots the others in other non fatal locations. She tells the manager she needs a safe deposit box key. The leader is outraged, complaining that she set the whole thing up for a safe deposit box. She tells the leader her name isn’t Maggie. The manager gives her the key. She opens the box, and finds an envelope.

Caves: Jack asks again whether there’s anything Kate wants to tell him. He opens the case, sets aside the cash and guns and hands her the envelope she found in the box. She opens the envelope. In it is a toy airplane. He wants to know what it is. She tells him it’s nothing. He demands to know the truth. She tells him it belonged to the man she loved. Jack pesters her, demanding to know the real truth. She finally tells him it belonged to the man she killed. She sits down and cries. He packs up the case and walks away.

Beach, sunset. The castaways are dragging their stuff further up the beach. They settle in under a stand of trees.

Later, Charlie comes and sits by a fire next to Rose. He asks her about her husband, she explains that he was in the tail, but he’ll be back. Charlie is amazed, saying how could she know he’s a alive. She says she just knows he is, and that there’s a fine line between denial and faith, and it’s better on her side. She smiles. He hangs his head and starts to cry. He asks her to help him. She says she’s not the one that can help. She takes his hand, and begins to pray as he cries.

Shannon sits down next to Sayid. He looks at her. She tells him that the guy from St Tropez had a kid who hated her. The kid, as kids do watched a movie—the one with the fish-- over and over again. She explains that the movie was dubbed in French, and the song was in French. She begins to sing the French lyrics for Beyond the Sea. Boone quietly watches them from behind.

Jack walks past Kate. She stares into the fire and plays with the toy airplane.
