Raised by Another

Back to our eyeball openings. This time it’s Claire’s lovely blue peeper. She wakes up, it’s dark, she’s in the cavesWe hear sounds of a baby crying, she gets up to investigate... she’s not pregnant?! She wanders out into the jungle, following the sound of the baby. She comes across a table with a lamp. Locke is sitting at it, reading tarot cards. She asks him what’s happening. He tells her she should know what’s happening. “He was your responsibility, but you gave him away. Everyone pays the price now.” He looks up. He has one black pupil and one white. Claire stumbles away, finds a crib with a mobile above it with Oceanic airplanes. She reaches into the crib, pulling the blankets aside, and comes away with bloody hands.

Claire wakes up screaming and flailing. Charlie rushes to her side, trying to calm her, to He tells her she was sleepwalking. She finally calms down, and he looks at her palms—they’re covered with blood.

--commercial break—

Jack bandages Claire’s hands, talking about her nightmare, which caused her to make fists and dig her nails into her palms. He asks her about her prenatal care, which she confirms was good and the baby’s healthy. He asks when she found out she was pregnant.

--flashback—

Claire and her boyfriend are looking over a pregnancy test, surprised at a positive result. They talk and he suggests, to her protests, that they try to make a go of it as parents. He says some sweet words and she finally relents.

Beach: Jack approaches Kate, standing at the water’s edge. She tells him she’s sinking in the sand, something she used to do with her mother. Kate reminds him that Sayid has been gone for a week. She asks why Jack’s there. He says he’s bringing water down and fish back. He tells her Claire will be having the baby soon.

Jungle: Charlie approaches Claire with a couple of cups of tea. He comments on her writing in her diary, and asks about her dream. Charlie tells about a strange dream he had. Claire insists she’s okay. Charlie says he’s worried about her, and suggests that if she needs a friend, he’d be happy to be one for her. She doesn’t answer.

--flashback—

Claire and a friend are at a psychic. He reads Claire’s palms. He asks about her baby (which she has said nothing about) He suddenly stops the reading, and gives her money back, and asks her to leave. She leaves, confused.

Caves, night: Claire is sleeping. A hand goes over her face, she wakes up. There’s a flash of steel!

--commercial break—

Claire wakes up screaming again. She says someone tried to attack her. Charlie and Hurley go searching for her attacker. Claire tells Jack someone was trying to stab her in the belly with a needle of some sort. Jack is clearly skeptical.

Jungle: Jack approaches Hurley, who says they’ve had no luck finding anyone. He tells Jack he had an idea, however, to take a census of everyone there, because they don’t really know who their fellow castaways are. By way of explanation, he tells Jack his name isn’t really Hurley.

Caves: Charlie brings Claire a blanket, asking if she’s okay. He tells her she can sleep if she wants, he’ll watch over her, and won’t leave her.

--flashback—

A rather pregnant Claire is hanging curtains when her boyfriend gets home. She starts talking domesticity. He grabs a beer. She notices he’s acting funny. He tells her it’s not working out, with a lot of self-centered claptrap about not being ready to be a father. He accuses her of getting pregnant on purpose. She flips out, he leaves.

Beach: Hurley wanders around taking his census. He talks to Locke, asking about his travel.

Kate, Jack and Charlie are walking on the beach, talking about Claire’s attack. Jack says he thinks she was just dreaming. Charlie lays into him. Kate stops them from arguing, asking what they should do. Jack says the important thing is to keep Claire calm so she doesn’t go into early labor. Charlie reiterates that it’s not all in her head and storms off.

Hurley approaches Ethan, who’s harvesting papayas, and gets census info from him. Ethan says his last name is Rom, and he’s from Ontario.

Caves: Claire’s reading. Jack approaches her and offers her some mild anti-anxiety meds. She gets upset and packs, saying she felt safer at the beach. Jack tries to stop her, to no avail.

Charlie watches as she storms off, demanding to know what Jack said to her.

Claire stomps off into the jungle

--flashback—

Claire is at the psychic’s again, and asks him to finish her reading. He takes her hands again. He mentions her boyfriend leaving. She asks if that’s why he stopped the reading before. He says no, that he saw something else, indistinct. He confirms that she wants to go through with the reading. He tells her that it’s crucial that she raises her baby, not to worry about her boyfriend. He says it would be dangerous for anyone but her to raise it, that her goodness must be an influence in the child’s development. She tells him she’s putting the baby up for adoption. He gets upset and tells her that the baby must not be raised by another. She gets up, ready to leave, he gives her her money back. He insists the baby needs her protection. She leaves.

--commerical break—

Claire is in her apartment. It’s late at night, the phone rings, it’s the psychic, telling her he has a plan for dealing with her baby. She tells him she’s planning to sign adoption papers. He pleads with her not to, she hangs up.

Jungle path: Charlie approaches Claire, asking why she’s going back to the beach. She reiterates that she’s not crazy.

Beach: Hurley takes census from Shannon and Boone, as they’re packing up. Boone is skeptical about the reason for the census. Hurley explains about Claire’s attack. Shannon tosses her bag down, saying she’s not moving from the beach. Boone tells Hurley his job should be easier if he can find the passenger manifest, since they crossed off all the names of the dead when they burned the fuselage. He tells Hurley Sawyer has the list.

Hurley approaches Sawyer, who’s reclining in the shade. He asks nicely, and Sawyer tells him where the manifest is.

Jungle: Charlie offers to carry Claire’s bag. Claire asks why he came after her. Charlie says he likes her. She says he doesn’t like her, he just wants to rescue her, and that she’s perfectly fine. Suddenly she stops and clutches her belly in pain.

--commercial break—

Claire hunches over, Charlie flips out, tries to time the contractions. She tells him to go get Jack. He says he won’t leave her, that he’ll be fine, if he can kick drugs he can deliver a baby. She stares at him, he tries to explain. She yells at him to get Jack. He runs off.

--flashback—

Claire’s in a lawyer’s office with an adoptive couple. The lawyer explains that she’ll be completely severing her parental rights. She seems slightly unsure. He gives her the paperwork to sign. The pen doesn’t work. A second pen doesn’t work. She stops, and says she can’t do it, and leaves.

Claire goes to the psychic’s house again, and asks what his offer is.

Jungle: Charlie runs into Ethan, and tells him to go get Jack. Ethan runs off. Charlie runs back to Claire. He holds her hand and gets her to breathe and calm down. In pain, she says she’s not even supposed to be there. Charlie says they all feel like that. Claire says it’s just that someone told her things would be different. Charlie says he must’ve been wrong.

--flashback—

Claire’s at the psychic’s house. He’s giving her money, and tells her he found a couple in LA that the baby will be safe with. She’s confused and skeptical.

Jungle: Claire’s been explaining the psychic to Charlie. Charlie stops for a moment, and tells her maybe the psychic wasn’t crazy. That if all he wanted was for no one else to raise the child, that maybe he knew the plane was going to go down.

--flashback—

The psychic hands Claire a plane ticket and her money. She says she can’t go tomorrow. He says it must be that flight, flight 815.

Back in the jungle, Claire tells Charlie that she thinks there was no couple. That the psychic knew.

--commercial break—

Sayid limps through the jungle.

Charlie asks Claire if she’s having more contractions. She says she’s okay. He wonders where Jack is. Charlie makes surse she’s okay, and tells her maybe stress could’ve caused the contractions. He asks if she thinks she can make it back to the caves, and promises her he won’t let anything happen to her. She agrees.

Sayid stumbles into the caves. Jack attends to his injured leg. Sayid explains about what he found, and says they’re not alone, as Locke looks on, concerned.

Charlie and Claire are walking back. Claire stops again, Charlie’s concerned, but she just smiles and says the baby just kicked, and puts his hand on her belly.

Hurley dashes madly into the caves, ignoring Sayid, and telling Jack there’s a problem—one of the people he got a name from wasn’t on the passenger manifest.

In the jungle, Ethan approaches Claire and Charlie, saying hello in a creepily calm way. Charlie puts a protective arm around Claire’s shoulder and asks Ethan where Jack is. Ethan just stares at Claire’s belly.
