Pilot 1

  • Written By: JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber
  • Directed By: JJ Abrams

Jack wakes up, in pain. He sees a dog, and a child's shoe hanging from a tree. He gets to his feet, stumbles out of the jungle and hears screams. His doctor's instincts kick in and he rushes to help people (with the assistance of others, including Locke), including a man whose leg has been crushed and a pregnant woman having contractions (Claire.) He asks another passenger (Hurley) to help with Claire, and tells people to stay away from the engine which is still running, to no avail, as someone gets sucked up inside it, causing an explosion. He sees another passenger (Boone) attempting CPR on an unconscious passenger (Rose) and goes to take over. He then notices a wing is about to fall off of the fuselage, and Hurley and Claire are right in the path of destruction. He moves them out of the way just before the wing falls, causing another explosion which throws them to the ground and hurls a chunk of burning metal toward another passenger (Charlie) walking around in a daze, who barely notices.

Credits roll over Jack looking around for others who might need his help, and then he moves off to a quiet space to examine his own injuries. He sees a large gash on his side, just out of reach. Another passenger (Kate) comes toward him and he tells her he's a doctor, and asks if she can help him sew up the wound. After some reluctance, she agrees.

Dusk falls on the beach, as the survivors stumble around, trying to make some sense of their situation. We see one man (Sawyer), obviously tense, lighting up a cig and surveying the wreckage. Hurley gathers food from the plane's galley to distribute to the passengers. Locke sits on the beach, looking at the ocean. Claire stands in the water, looking concernedly at her pregnant belly. Boone wanders around with his cel phone, trying to get a signal. Another passenger (Sayid) builds a signal fire, and asks for Charlie's help with it. Rose kisses her wedding ring.

We return to Jack and Kate, as she's working on him and he explains to her how he gets past fear in dire situations.

Evening on the beach, and various groups of survivors are gathered around on the beach. Charlie is writing on tape on his fingers, and Sayid despairs of being found. A teen girl (Shannon) in denial, paints her toenails and refuses an offer of chocolate from Boone, her brother, insisting she'll eat on the rescue boat. Hurley gives some food to Claire and asks her how her "baby stuff" is doing. We meet Michael, who asks his son Walt if he's warm, as Walt lays by the fire, staring quietly. Jin tells Sun she must stick with him, and not worry about the others.

Kate watches while Jack examines a passenger with a large piece of shrapnel in his stomach. She asks him if the man will live, and Jack asks if she knew him. She says he was sitting next to her.

Cut to later, where Jack and Kate explain how the crash happened. Kate mentions that the front end of the plane broke off, and Jack mentions they should try to find it, so they can find the black box. Kate mentions she knows where she saw some smoke, and tells Jack she wants to come with him if they go looking.

Then things start getting spooky, as we hear some loud, violent noises, and see a bunch of trees in the valley being torn down. Our heroes stare at the noise and motion, wondering what fresh hell they've gotten into, now. "Terrific" as Charlie says.

The next morning, the passengers are standing around, talking about where they might be, where they're all from. Jack is preparing to go hunt for the cockpit, and Kate reiterates that she wants to come with him. He tells her she'll need better shoes, and there is a poignant scene of her removing hiking boots from a body. In the midst of this grim task, Kate looks up to see Locke staring back at her. He smiles big, revealing an orange slice in his mouth.

The rest of the group are sitting around discussing the creature in the forest, and Hurley asks if they should do something about the "b-o-d-y-s" in the fuselage. Jack passes them on his way out, and Charlie volunteers to go with him and Kate on the cockpit-finding expedition. Jack tells Boone to keep an eye on the wounded while they're gone.

On the trek, Kate mentions to Charlie that he looks familiar. Happy to be recognized, Charlie sings a snippet of music for her, and tells her he's in a band called Drive Shaft. Jack tells them to keep going. Kate tells Charlie the band was good, and Charlie reiterates that they're still together, and making a comeback. The dog watches them from the bushes.

A sudden rainstorm crops up, drenching our three trekkers, and making the beach crowd huddle under what shelter they can manage. Locke, however, sits on the beach and turns his face to the sky. The creature again appears in the drizzle, tearing up more trees in the forest behind them.

Jack, Kate and Charlie find the front chunk of the plane, which is nearly vertical in a grove of trees.

Our three heroes carefully and painfully make the climb up toward the cockpit, working their way across rain-slickened floors and past dead passengers. Jack forces the cockpit door open, with one of the flight crew spilling out of it, and they crawl into the cockpit, looking for the transciever. In the midst of this, the pilot, still strapped to his chair wakes up. They exchange information about their circumstances, and the pilot explains what happened: 6 hours into their flight from Sydney to LA, the plane loses its radio, and so turns back, aiming for Fiji to try to find a place to land. By the time they hit turbulence and break up in midair, they are 1,000 miles off-course, meaning any rescuers will be looking for them in the wrong place. Jack notices that Charlie is missing, and sends Kate to look for him. She finds him coming out of the bathroom, a strange look on his face. She asks what he was doing in there and he doesn't explain, interrupted by The Creature making its noisy appearance. Stupidly poking his head out of the front window to look, the battered pilot gets taken by the creature, leaving a bloody stain across the windows. The plane crashes over, upside down but level, and our three heroes grab the transciever and run out. On the way, Charlie trips and gets caught in some roots. Jack runs back to help him while Kate runs on, hiding herself in a small thicket of trees, calling for Jack. Terrified, she counts to five, remembering what Jack told her about managing fear.

Boldened, she gets ready to run back, and is accosted by Charlie, sans Jack. In her panic, Kate knocks Charlie to the ground and demands that they go back looking for him, much to Charlie's dismay. They don't have to go far before they find a puddle with the pilot's wing pin floating in it. Looking into the water, they see a reflection with an outline of a body in the trees above them. Jack finds them, tells them that he didn't see the creature, but had hid in some bushes. The three then look up, to see the pilot's bloodied body far above them in the trees.
